Duke It Out: Summer Classes

Summer, my favorite time of year. Not because of the weather (yay, swimming!) or the fashion (yay, things that aren't sweaters!) though those things are great - I love summer for the same reason that pretty much every other kid who went to school in America does; no class!

Duke It Out: Facebook

Facebook. Social network, amazing way to stay in touch, the single greatest contributor to my finals-procrastination mental breakdown. Love it or hate it, Facebook pretty much owns our asses – the question is, has it gone too far?

Duke It Out: Electronic Attendance

Ah, George Orwell, how miserable you made my life in high school. But look, now it’s happening again – except this time it’s not Mr. Orwell’s fault that I’ve got Big Brother on the brain (no, not the TV show… is that still on?). This time it’s Northern Arizona University and their plan to install an attendance system that electronically reads student ID cards to tell if you showed up to your giant lecture course.

Duke It Out: Cheating Confessions

Cheating has always been, will always be, a touchy subject. We’ve debated what cheating is, whether you should forgive a cheater, but now it’s time to turn those sneers inward and ask the dirty little question – what if you cheat? There seems to be a little dissent about whether or not you should confess that you cheated and I think it’s time we got a consensus.

Duke It Out: Preventative Botox

Hello, my name is Lauren, and I have a problem. I’d like to lay the blame on my mother (it’s just so convenient!) or maybe her mother before her, but the truth is it’s probably a lot of factors going back who knows how far that have led me to this moment: I’m obsessed with looking young.

Duke It Out: Tie Dye

The fashion industry loves to bring back old fashion trends. Sometimes that’s a good thing (hello, waist-cinching belts!) other times, not so good (‘80s linebacker shoulder pads, really?) and then there are those times when I’m just not quite sure what to think. Enter tie dye.

Duke It Out: Going Down

We all have our own definitions of what does and doesn’t count as sex. There’s the classic, “just the tip doesn’t count” or the frat party anthem, “if I can’t remember it, it doesn’t count” or, my personal favorite, “he didn’t get off so it doesn’t count.” But apparently there’s a whole new level of not counting at college – according to a survey at the University of Kentucky, only 20% of students think oral sex counts as sex.

Duke It Out: College Condoms

This week, under the category of “news that made me say WTF!” was this little story about students at Georgetown University taping their mouths and chaining themselves to a statue in front of the school in protest of the fact the Georgetown doesn’t provide or help to provide contraceptive options like condoms to it’s students.

Duke It Out: Birthday Shots

This week, the last bar in State College (that’s the town where the main campus of Penn State is – the name confused me for a while too) to hold out on the 21st birthday tradition of doing way too many shots decided to amend it’s stance and stop serving shots to new 21 year-olds. All of the bars in State College now abide by this policy – you can still get beer or mixed drinks, just no shots...

Duke It Out: Super-Seniors?

I know what you're thinking - no, I'm not talking about really active senior citizens, I think they're great (go Betty White!) - I'm talking about those people who hang around undergrad for 6 or 7 or 10 years "finding themselves" without ever actually bothering to get a degree.

Duke It Out: Sexting

Sexting always seemed like a no brainer to me - don't send naked pictures of yourself out into the world unless you want everybody to see them (see the smarts a college education buys!) - but it seems like the line has gotten blurrier and blurrier and now I'm not sure what to think.

Duke It Out: Chivalry?

Earlier this month, we were asking where chivalry had gone – and I’m down with that, I’d like to know where the little sucker slipped of to, too. But what I want to talk about now is, if chivalry is gone, do we really want it back? And should we expect it?

Duke It Out: Sheer for Spring?

I really thought that this trend was going to die last year, but apparently, I really missed it on that call. From what I have seen so far from the runways and red carpets, sheer is back for spring. And I’m not just talking sheer here – I’m talking “hello world, here’s my bra” no tank top, sheer.

Duke It Out: Valentine’s Day?

Ok I know what you're thinking, "ugh, another Valentine's post". You're probably as sick of hearing about this lovey-dovey holiday as I am (seriously, they put up the Cupid decorations on New Years Day!) but I think it's about time we really had it out on this one. Valentine's Day - do or don't?

Duke It Out: Gay Marriage

I admit, I’ve put off talking about gay marriage here for a while, in part because, well, I went to a liberal arts school in NYC – I have way too many gay friends to really be impartial here. Then last week, the assistant managing editor of the Notre Dame student newspaper resigned during the controversy over an anti-gay joke that appeared in the paper’s comic strip and I realized that this is an issue that still affects us all.
