Shop Your Closet: Boyfriend Jeans

I'm being incredibly optimistic about the weather. After several weeks of gray skies, rain, snow, sleet and at times a strange hybrid of precipitation, the weather network is telling me it's going to be sunny next week(!!!) And after months of only wearing things that can be stuffed into boots that make my feet sweat, all I want to do is show a little ankle (even if it means shaving my legs).

Shop Your Closet: Plaid Shirt

As plaid shirts have been super popular the last few years, pretty much every college girl has one in her wardrobe. (This college girl has 5. NBD.) If not, it's easy to find someone to beg, borrow or steal (and return washed) one from. If you have a plaid shirt that is flannel, it's a great way to add pattern to your daily wardrobe, while still having a cozy piece of clothing to face the cold in.

Shop Your Closet: Shawl-Collar Sweater

If you made a New Year's Resolution to wear sweatpants less, it's time to start finding alternatives that are just as easy to wear and comfortable. Not possible, you say? Well listen up, woman! That cozy, warm, comfy feeling you get with sweats can be mimicked with a warm sweater, such as a shawl-collared pullover.

Shop Your Closet: Sweatshirt

It's the week after Christmas, you've spent the weekend enjoying holiday treats and all you want to do is bum around the house. It's cold outside. You're cringing at the thought of stumbling out into the treacherous terrain, but you made plans to meet up with a friend.

Shop Your Closet: Back to Basics for NYE

Forget battling the crowds at the mall or spending oodles of money on something you'll most likely only wear once (either because it's too fancy for any other occasion or ruined when your friend spills her vodka cran down the front); all you need for the perfect New Year's look is a little creativity and all those basics you've got stuffed into drawers.

Shop Your Closet: Boyfriend Blazer

Learning how to layer under your boyfriend blazer is an important skill for the winter but one that will pay off until the snow starts to thaw in May. I've got three fabulous options that require nothing more than some creativity and all the clothes you've already got in your closet. With this, there's no excuse for that shapeless winter wear, ladies!

Shop Your Closet: Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans have been popular for a long time now. You've probably got quite a few pairs in your closet and you've been wearing them for years. But that's the problem. There's only so many ways you can style a pair of skinnies and your everyday look is starting to get boring.

Shop Your Closet: Strapless Dress

I'm a huge fan of dresses. They're feminine, comfortable and instantly make you dressed up, even if you just rolled out of bed. But despite my dress devotion, the colder it gets outside, the less inclined I am to actually wear one. Or at least, that's how it used to be.

Shop Your Closet: White Button-up Shirt

Whether or not you ever wear it, you probably have a white button-up shirt in your closet. If your mom bought it for you, thinking it would be a good wardrobe foundation (she was right!) or it's one of your go-tos for job interviews, it's a pretty common piece to own.

Nov 15, 2010

Shop Your Closet: Black Cardigan

One thing I'm sure you everyone owns is a black cardigan. It's definitely an essential item for the college girl - it goes with anything, is easy to wear, is perfect for layering when going from a cold classroom to a steamy library, and doesn't show the dirt that's accumulated since your last laundry day....3 weeks ago.

Shop Your Closet: Ruffled Top

There's a pile of clothes on the floor beside your closet, and you're still standing in your undies undecided about what to wear. The transitional season wardrobe slump has hit you. Whether key pieces of clothing are sitting in your hamper (two wears over what is considered hygienic) or you just can't make up your mind, you have nothing to wear. On the verge of running late for your class, your job or meeting up with friends, you know you have to "Make it work!"

Shop Your Closet: Fair Isle Cardigan

Got a case of the Mondays? Having trouble getting dressed after your weekend of Halloween celebrations? Before you roll out of bed and instinctively go for your comfiest sweats and slide your feet into a pair of Uggs, please stop and consider the following:

Shop Your Closet: Rain boots

I love most things about fall - anything made with pumpkin, cozy sweaters and my TV shows starting back up - but the one thing I've never been a fan of is the dampness and rain that comes with all these wonderful things. At least until I invested in a pair of good quality rain boots.

Shop Your Closet: Cropped Blazer

One of the most versatile items you can have in your wardrobe is a blazer. When you're operating with limited closet space or a limited budget, you want to make sure you have items (especially outerwear) that go with pretty much anything, and a cropped blazer is one of the go-to pieces you should own.

Shop Your Closet: Leather Skirt

The leather skirt is super versatile and can be worn with a wide variety of items for many different occasions. Though this item may seem tricky to incorporate into your wardrobe, it's a challenge everyone should take on. Especially because it's possible to build outfits around a leather skirt with stuff you've already got lying around (because lord knows you haven't had time to hang anything up since midterms started....).

Shop Your Closet: Shorts

Every year when I start school I get so excited to show off my summer wardrobe (that no one got to see for three months) for a few weeks. But then the leaves start to change, the Halloween stores pop up, and my cute summer clothes get banished to the back of my closet, where they sit taking up precious space for the rest of the year.

Shop Your Closet: The Striped Tank

As the temperatures stop, drop, and roll (or just drop), we must say goodbye to our favorite summer styles in favor of warmer options. And it's depressing. Not because we don't love fall (because, DUH, we do), but because it's hard to part with best friends and that perfectly worn-in tank, that's been with you through everything, is the best friend of all.

Shop Your Closet: Full Skirt

Fashion is all about recycling trends (which is why I kick myself when I think about all those leggings I got rid of in the '90s ). One decade that made a strong reappearance during the Fall/Winter 2010 runway shows was the 1950s. With the overwhelming popularity of Man Med, this really comes as no surprise

Shop Your Closet: Military Jackets

When moving into either a dorm or an off-campus apartment, your wardrobe will face two major challenges: 1. A major lack of funding (to add more to it). 2. A major lack of storage space. For these two reasons alone, maximizing what you do own becomes essential.

Shopping Your Closet: Sexy Camisoles

A sexy camisole is a definite fashion staple for any woman's closet. And I'm pretty sure we all have a few lying around that we can't quite figure out how to wear. But bring those lacy numbers out, ladies, because they're easy to wear for nearly every occasion. (Pretty much everything besides the gym. That would be weird.)

Shopping Your Closet: Graphic Tees

Graphic tees are a fun, comfortable way to express your individuality and style (sorry, your "I LOVE BEER" shirt doesn't count...), without breaking the bank. Every one of us has at least one that we enjoy wearing on a regular basis, but most likely we are wearing it simply with a pair of jeans or some sweatpants for the sake of comfort.

Aug 19, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Cardigans

Even though the word "cardigan" conjures up images of grandmothers, the 1950s/1960s, librarians, and overly-preppy girls, this piece does not get enough credit for being able to completely change the vibe of your outfit, no matter your sense of style.

Shopping Your Closet: Oversized Sweaters for Fall

While I'm enjoying summer's warm weather, there is one thing I'm really excited about for fall: cozy, oversized sweaters. I know, I shouldn't wish away the summer months, but seeing all those fall clothes out on the racks is getting me super pumped for sipping a hot coffee in my fall wardrobe on the way to class. Sigh.

Shopping Your Closet: Hoodies

While hoodies don't exactly have a rep for being fashionable, every girl has a few in her closet. They are pretty much THE staple in every college wardrobe since they are comfy, warm, and easily slip on over whatever you wore to bed last night. Even hardcore fashionistas have lazy days!

Shopping Your Closet: All You Need Is Tights

Throwing some tights in the mix is insanely cheaper than buying a new wardrobe and you can really create tons of new outfits with just a few pairs. Tights can function merely to keep your legs warm when it gets chilly while also adding style with bright colors and patterns.

Jul 22, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Boots

When summer rolls around, boots get shoved to the back of the closet along with heavy coats, sweaters, and scarves. But who these days can afford to buy a wardrobe for each season? And who wants to give up wearing the fabulousness that is a hot pair of boots for nearly half of the year?

Jul 15, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Leggings

Fall merchandise will be arriving in stores over the next few weeks, and while it may be tempting to run out and get a whole new back to school wardrobe, don't! Wait for sales to begin, and shop in your closet instead. One item that the majority of college girls have in their closets are leggings.

Jul 8, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Long Necklaces

Long necklaces, like these from J. Crew, can add glamour to any basic look: a cardigan and tank, a dress, even a pantsuit (if, you know, you're going for the Hilary Clinton look...)! But there are several other uses for long necklaces, as well. You just have to think outside the box a little bit.

Shopping Your Closet: Toughen Up A Sundress

The best outfits happen when you mix two contrasting styles to create something totally new. Recently, the feminine yet edgy trend has been spotted on many celebs, including Demi Lovato and Lindsay Lohan. The leather jacket adds a tough element to a floral dress, making a new and totally unique look.

Shopping Your Closet: Summer Scarves

I know there is a serious anti-summer-scarf movement out there, but I am not a part of it. I love scarves - yes, even in the summer. They are really versatile pieces and can really add a lot to an otherwise boring wardrobe. And they can be incorporated in many ways - not just tying those suckers around your neck.

Jun 17, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Long Skirts

So, long skirts were in style at some point in the last 5 years and you somehow have, like, 12 taking up space in the back of your closet. You're obvi more into the show-off-your-legs kinda skirts these days, but you can't bear to part with them. You don't have to - in fact, they could be the most versatile pieces in your entire wardrobe!

Jun 10, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: The Basic White Tank

Everyone has a basic white tank, like this classic Theory top, in their wardrobe. Maybe you wear it under a sweater, or with sweats on a lazy day. However, that basic white tank is not reaching its full fashion potential. Such a versatile piece can be worn in so many different ways, it's like having ten outfits in one!

Jun 3, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Last Summer’s Shorts

It's (finally) June, which means shorts weather is fast approaching! I personally find it hard to spend a lot of money on shorts. I mean, they're like 1/3 of a pair of pants for a similar price. Scam? I think so. Plus, they can only be worn for a few months a year. I'd rather invest in jeans or tops I can layer that work year-round.

May 27, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Just Add a Belt

Adding a belt is one of the easiest ways to update an outfit. Instead of going out and spending your money on an entire new ensemble, pick up a fun, stylish belt that works with something you already own!

May 20, 2009

Shopping Your Closet: Old Jeans

A few pairs of old jeans are probably taking up some of your precious closet space right now. They don't fit, they're out of style, and you haven't worn them in years. But don't be so quick to throw them out! Jeans are the easiest clothing items to update.

Shopping Your Closet: The Mini Dress

A mini dress is one of the most versatile pieces in your closet since it can be worn as a dress or a top. Therefore buying one is like a double investment, right? (Right?? because I just bought six.)
