My Love/Hate Relationship With College

Like with most things in my life (namely, the boy I'm kinda, sorta talking to right now), I have a very complicated relationship with college. Over the past four years, we’ve had our ups and downs. There have been moments when my only thoughts were, I love college (when I was living one of these moments), and there were others when I’ve thought, I hate college with a fiery passion…

7 Worst Excuses for Turning in An Assignment Late

It’s a Friday morning. Your alarm goes off for the tenth time. You look at the clock and realize you’ve hit the snooze button well into the first five minutes of your ever dreaded Friday morning class, which you’re only taking because it was the only thing open when you were finally able to register. You grab your shoes and your books and finally sneak into a seat at the back of the class just in time to hear your professor ask that you send your assignments forward.

Surviving Senior Year: Over the Over-Analyzing

So this semester I’m taking my senior capstone classes. The seminar focuses on literature itself and the reflective tutorial focuses on literary theory and literary criticism. They’re supposed to be the culmination of everything we’ve ever learned as English majors. They’re supposed to extremely challenging, hardcore courses that push our limits. And they are extremely challenging and they do push my limits.

The Weekly Ten: Drop That Class

By now your semester is in full swing. It's early enough that you're still optimistic, but not so early that you're wishing you could still sleep until noon everyday. You’ve unpacked your dorm, caught up with your friends, and even gotten settled into all of your classes. But are you really happy with all of your classes?

Duke It Out: Flat Rate Tuition

One of the big buzz topics surrounding colleges in the last couple of years has been an administrative push to get everyone to graduate "on time" - as in, the four year model. Florida's university system thinks they might have found the answer - as a number of other colleges have - in "block tuition". Block tuition is basically just a flat rate system where every student pays a set price for a year or semester, regardless of how many credit hours they take.

College Won’t Get You a Job, But It’s Still Worth It

Recently, there have been several stories questioning the worth of a college education. Are we paying too much for a future that consists of scanning the classifieds for low-skilled work in flannel jammies while spooning Ben and Jerry’s into our higher-educated bodies?

The DuoBinder Saves the Day (Or Your GPA)

I recently received an email from someone asking if I wanted to try a "revolutionary binder." I wasn't really sure what could possibly revolutionize a binder (flashing lights? A smoke machine? It did your reading for you?), but being the school supplies whore that I am, I accepted. A few days later, the Duo Binder arrived on my doorstep.

We’ve All Been There: The Winter Walk To Class

Your alarm goes off and before you even get out of bed, the winter chill hits you. It’s gonna be a cold day, which is great since you have 4 classes and a meeting. You pull back the covers and jump out of bed. Holy hell it's cold. You curse your state. You curse your old house and it's terrible heater. You curse your stupid choice to pick a school not in the Caribbean

College Q&A: Class Overload

Help! It took me forever to choose a major and now that I have, I have a lot of catching up to do. Like, a lot. I’m reworking my schedule for next semester right now and I’m not sure if I should load on the classes (and take a full 18 credits) and really struggle through all the reading and writing (I’m a History major), or take an easier load and stick around for Spring/Summer term.

My Freshman Year: Counting Down and Looking Ahead

Yes, it's true: it’s the final countdown (and I don’t mean the annoying song by Europe, because I won’t do that to you right now). The semester is drawing to a close, final exams are rapidly approaching, and we are all awaiting the commencement of winter break with bated breath.

College: There’s a First Time for Everything

Freshman year of college, from what I’ve learned so far, is a series of firsts. Some of them are great – first 11:00 a.m. class (yay sleep!), first weekend away at school – while others simply aren’t – like your first midterm exam. But regardless of whether or not these firsts are awesome in themselves, just experiencing them is exhilarating.

8 Things I’ve Learned About College (So Far)

Whew! It’s been three weeks since I first set foot on campus, and what a crazy three weeks it’s been! It might still be too early to tell (psh, yeah right), but I’ve come to the conclusion that college is totally awesome, and for a number of reasons.
