Mindy Kaling once described Twitter as “the most amazing medium for a comedy writer.” And with the number of Twitter jokes I see on my feed on a daily basis, I’d say she’s right. Twitter is a constant source of humor, updating as quickly as celebs can type out their everyday thoughts.
Jokes on Twitter may seem difficult, as every idea has to be tied up into a short 140-character package, but that usually doesn’t stop the funny celebs from doing what they do best. Most writers from iconic comedy shows can be found on Twitter, with stars from the SNL cast and my personal favorite show The Mindy Project visiting the app on a daily basis (can you tell I’m a fan of Mindy Kaling?).
And it’s not just comedians that dish out the funniest stuff. There are a number of famous celebs who give us a lens into their lives by sending out that 140-character message every once in a while. So, in order for you to get the most of these amazing tweets, we’ve compiled a list of the funniest celebs on Twitter. Because reading a funny tweet is kind of like a celeb sending a personal hilarious message just for you (and well, for the rest of the world, of course).
1. Mae Whitman, @maebirdwing
Star of NBC’s Parenthood and famed character Anne/Egg on Arrested Development (her?), Whitman shows her true funny side with her daily dose of Twitter hilarity.
Have cried three times during this Jeopardy episode. Maybe I should go outside!

2. Mindy Kaling, @mindykaling
You knew this one was coming. Mindy Kaling is, simply put, the coolest.
I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me.
— Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling) January 7, 2014
3. Maude Apatow, @maudeapatow
If you haven’t followed this girl on any form of social media, now is the time. Daughter of the awesome Judd Apatow and the equally awesome Leslie Mann, Maude Apatow is a young actress whose tweets are just as funny as her family keeps proving to be.
I think I am the person who, when someone asks for a bite of their sandwich, says no and makes everything feel tense
— Maude Apatow (@maudeapatow) November 19, 2013
4. Billy Eichner, @billyeichner
Watching Billy Eichner in Funny or Die’s Billy on the Street is hilarious enough, but his tweets are not to be ignored. Special shout-out to his Golden Globes live-tweeting rampage.
"I wear ever single chain, even when I'm in the house"- Drake, and also my Aunt Pearl
— billy eichner (@billyeichner) January 10, 2014
5. Anna Kendrick, @AnnaKendrick47
Her observations always seem to be equally true and hilarious.
"Keratin treatment will make your hair feel like it had a good workout." So, my hair will be sweaty, miserable and desperate for ice cream?
— Anna Kendrick (@AnnaKendrick47) November 4, 2013
6. Zach Braff, @zachbraff
This guy is one of the best on Twitter. Enough said.
“@peoplemag: Here he is, your Sexiest Man Alive — ADAM LEVINE! http://t.co/UfnvRlT8nK #SexiestManAlive” you spelled Zach Braff wrong.
— Zach Braff (@zachbraff) November 20, 2013
7. Ellen DeGeneres, @TheEllenShow
Ellen’s thoughts straight to your phone. What more could you ask for? Added bonus: #ClassicJokeWednesday every week.
Was gonna go to the gym, but parking lot was so crowded I would've had to park 3 blocks away. I'm not walking that far to get on a treadmill
— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) January 2, 2014
8. Chris Pratt, @prattprattpratt
Pratt takes to Twitter and stays true to his funny-guy nature that we love on Parks and Recreation.
Super weird. In England band-aids are called plasters and they freak out when you eat em.
— chris pratt (@prattprattpratt) July 16, 2013
9. B.J. Novak, @bjnovak
His jokes are some of the best on Twitter. His exchanges with Mindy Kaling on Twitter are also not to be missed.
Just for the record, WUPHF never would have cooperated with the NSA.
— B.J. Novak (@bjnovak) June 8, 2013
10. Rainn Wilson, @rainnwilson
Another Office alum, Rainn Wilson is definitely someone to follow if you want to laugh and simultaneously be reminded that a character as awesome as Dwight Shrute was once created.
I find it outrageous & inexcusable when I meet a paper towel dispenser where I actually have to turn or push something to get paper.
— RainnWilson (@rainnwilson) January 9, 2014
11. Dean Norris, @deanjnorris
Dean Norris is a celebrity you should definitely follow. I mean, the guy plays Uncle Hank on Breaking Bad.
MY favorite One Direction member? That's easy. Posh Spice for sure
— Dean Norris (@deanjnorris) January 9, 2014
12. Conan O’Brien, @ConanOBrien
One of the funniest talk show hosts and one of the funniest guys on Twitter.
I’ve already broken my New Year’s Resolution to not camp out on Jennifer Lawrence’s driveway.
— Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) January 3, 2014
13. Retta, @unfoRETTAble
The hilariousness of Donna on Parks and Rec seems to carry over to Retta on her real-life Twitter page. Though she doesn’t tweet those infamous hashtags of #bossbitch and #bitchboss like her character Donna does, Retta tweets some awesome material, especially when she’s watching a show.
I may be stating the obvious but the restroom sitch in Rome is suspect.#GetSomeTP#CanIGetAToiletSEAT#IsThereUrineOnEVERYTHING?#Ew
— Retta (@unfoRETTAble) January 1, 2014
14. Aziz Ansari, @azizansari
Whether it’s retweeting his cousin Harris (I recommend listening to his stand-up about him), or sharing his product ideas, Aziz’s jokes are as funny as his character Tom Haverford’s thought that Entertainment 720 would work out.
Business idea: Spin class where you eat ribs while you spin. "Push, push! Imagine you're going up a hill to eat ribs…"
— Aziz Ansari (@azizansari) October 21, 2013
15. Stephen Colbert, @StephenAtHome
Follow. Especially during political scandals. So basically just follow.
I didn't win a Golden Globe, but it's an honor just to assume I must have been nominated.
— Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome) January 14, 2014
16. Laura Benanti, @LauraBenanti
Recently in NBC’s live show of The Sound of Music, Benanti is an actress in both TV and film, and on Broadway. A friend recently told me to look at her Twitter, and after looking at just a few of her tweets, I’m thinking she should maybe start considering going into comedy.
I wish people who clapped in between push ups would slap themselves instead.
— Laura Benanti (@LauraBenanti) January 11, 2014
17. Kumail Nanjiani, @kumailn
This guy is one of the funniest comedians on Twitter. You may know him from his role in TNT’s Franklin & Bash or from one of his cameos as a phone store clerk on Portlandia (“It’s just a one time fee that you pay annually”).
