5 Over-The-Top Gourmet Grilled Cheeses We Needed, Like Yesterday

If there’s one thing I think we can all agree on in a time of such turmoil, it’s that the grilled cheese sandwich will forever be an unforgettable childhood memory, along with hot dogs, donuts, ice cream and macaroni-and-cheese.

Fortunately, we now have an excuse to seek out the cheesiest sandwiches around, because today is not only National Grilled Cheese Day (April 12), but it’s National Grilled Cheese Month! Who would have known such a glorious holiday existed? There are hilarious memes, new and innovative grilled cheese-inspired recipes and of course, lots of Instagram photos.

So, in honor of the grilled cheeses everywhere, here’s a list of five of the most outrageous, over-the-top gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches out there.

“The Amazing” –  The Grilled Cheese Bistro, Norfolk, Virginia

The Grilled Cheese Bistro, located on Granby Street in Norfolk, Virginia, serves up special grilled cheeses on a nightly basis, in addition to a variety of freshly-made salads and desserts.

Holding up to its name, “The Amazing” is made with Carolina-style pulled pork, onion rings, mango barbecue sauce, applewood-smoked bacon, mozzarella and cheddar.

“The Flamin’ Hot Doughnut Grilled Cheese” – Clinton Hall, Brooklyn, New York

Known for their over-the-top creations, Clinton Hall partnered with The Doughnut Project to create possibly the best grilled cheese known to man. The “Flamin’ Hot Doughnut Grilled Cheese” features a habanero-bacon doughnut cut in half, filled with a mound of mozzarella, served on a hook hovering above a steaming hot bowl of tomato soup.

“Annie’s Obsession” – Clementine, Los Angeles, California

Clementine chef/owner Annie Miler is definitely a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches, and lucky for those living in Los Angeles, she’s hosting her 16th Annual Grilled Cheese Month extravaganza, with more than 10 grilled sandwich variations to choose from.

The “Annie’s Obsession” sandwich is made quesadilla-style with shrimp, spicy salsa morita, avocado, chopped onions and cilantro.

“Grilled Cheese” – EastBurn, Portland, Oregon

EastBurn doesn’t need fancy names or ridiculous descriptions to prove that their plain-named “Grilled Cheese” sandwich is the best in America. EastBurn’s grilled cheese sandwich is made with gouda, bacon and tomato, served on multigrain wheat bread for just $5.

“The Crabby Melt” – Grilled Cheese and Co., Catonsville, Maryland

Grilled Cheese and Co. may have just three locations in Maryland, but they’re nationally known for their “Crabby Melt” sandwich, made with their signature house Crabby Dip, loaded with crab meat, topped with monterey jack cheese, served on ciabatta.
