Must-Read Tips For College Seniors On Preparing For Your First Job

Getting your first full-time job can seem extremely daunting. You’re moving on to something where people take you more seriously, and see you as an adult, not as a student, so the way employers look at your resume, or performance in your job can be completely different!

Clean Up Your Social Media

Your Tweets might be amazing, but employers really don’t want to hear about how much you don’t care about school, or know how much you drink on the weekends. And trust us, they check! Go through your social media platforms and start deleting posts that you don’t think you would send to your boss personally, that way when you start interviewing, your amazing interview and great resume won’t be overshadowed by that one video of your amazing twerking skills.

Try To Network With People Within Your Field

We don’t mean make inorganic connections with others in hopes of climbing the social ladder of your job market. We mean socializing with people within your new job or going to functions about the field you love. This way, if you can keep a strong connection with someone, they may be able to help you out in the future when you’re thinking about moving on or let you in on other possibilities that you didn’t know about!

Keep The Mindset Of Working Hard

It can be hard to try and do work during your last semester of college, but try not to slack off when writing a paper, or studying for a test because that mindset may continue when you start your new career. We know it can be difficult to want to continue working hard on a project for a class when graduation is a few months away, but trust us, you’ll be better for it!

Do Not Be Afraid To Work Outside Of Your Major

Yes, it can feel weird to apply for jobs that seem outside of your intended major, but don’t be afraid! For example, if you have an English degree, and you see an amazing job working for the social media team of a brand, go for it! Just because those kinds of jobs are usually for people in marketing or public relations does not mean that you will immediately fail!

Actually, Go To The Career Office

We all say we’re going to the career office at some point within our college life, but senior year is definitely the year to go if you’re willing to go at all. Career services can help you find jobs in the field you want to work in or help you tailor your resume to the job you’re looking for at the moment. We suggest going in September because, by May, the line to get help will be out the door! Also, be sure to have specific questions in mind. Maybe you’re wondering if there are any jobs that are asking for the skillsets you have, or you’re just wondering about what exactly you can do with our degree, the career services office in your school can really help you find your way as a senior!
