While JJ Grey & Mofro isn’t a new artist to know (they’ve been touring for over a decade), JJ and his band do need to be on your radar immediately. As summer comes to an end, you’re probably tired of hearing the same old songs ad nauseam (RIP Fancy). If you’re looking for something both relaxing and poignant to accompany your road trip back to school, press play.
JJ Grey hails from Florida originally, but his sound can’t be defined geographically. Equal parts southern rock and country, you can hear the history of music in his voice, from the original blues guitarists to the origins of rock and roll. Grey makes the current musical landscape look painfully vapid and empty (apologies to Ariana Grande). From his love for his land in Florida to his complicated relationships with women and drinking, it’s fraught with a lifetime of experience. No, his lyrical content isn’t exactly uncharted, but he creates intricate stories that are remarkably haunting. While his songs touch on complicated subject matter (some would be perfect research for an Environmental Science class), that doesn’t make his music heavy. Whether you’re into jam bands, old school rock, or country music, you have to see for yourself what JJ Grey & Mofro can do. Prepare to feel all the feelings, and start planning a swamp tour immediately.
Why You Should Know Them: His soulful sound straight from the bayou will make you want to see Grey and his band, Mofro, live — which is perfect, because his energy on tour is actually out of this world. His raspy vocals might make you think he’s a hundred year old Mississippi blues man, but his charismatic performance feels entirely modern. Whether you’re drinking or driving (obviously not at the same time), his music is the end of summer soundtrack that your life has been missing. 10 years of making music means he has a song for every emotion you’re feeling. He’s like Luke Bryan, only with more talent (and the same amount of hip swinging). Best of all? His song “99 Shades of Crazy” will make you feel 99 times more sane.
