Big Freedia Queen Diva Is Perfect For Your Pregame [Listen To This]

If you’ve never heard of Big Freedia, your life is severely lacking in fabulous. For the uninitiated, Big Freedia is a New Orleans bounce artist. Unclear on bounce? It’s a southern style of rap that’s influenced everyone from Juvenile, to the Ying Yang Twins, to Lil Wayne. It’s a genre that’s famous for its catchy, high energy call and response repetition over infectious beats. In fact, I dare you to listen to it for even a minute without busting out your T. Swift style dance moves. It was started by rappers emulating and imitating the Mardi Gras Indians, groups of men and women who parade close to Mardi Gras season in full feather regalia, passing down traditions over generations. Sissy bounce, the genre that Freedia personally popularized, is a genre spotlighting openly gay artists who bring the drama and the dancing to every performance.
I know you’re busy hailing Queen Bey, but if you can tear your eyes away from watching Blue Ivy dance to ***Flawless, there’s another Queen you need to know about immediately, and by that I mean yesterday at the latest. While I usually cover more indie musicians, Big Freedia is about as alternative as you can get. MiCy might think she invented twerking, but she’s nothing without Freedia. In fact, she should re-think her entire performance aesthetic, because once you see Freedia in action you’ll realize what a sad excuse for a booty bouncer Miley is. Even Nicki Minaj and her booty bouncing on Drake’s anaconda pales in comparison to Freedia’s hypnotic shaking once she releases her wiggle.
Big Freedia is a New Orleans icon who’s taking the world by storm thanks to her Fuse TV show and twerking. Wondering why Freedia is a she? Freedia explained to Out Magazine that, “A lot of people just can’t accept the fact of calling a man “she.” I totally understand that, and it’s never offensive to me, because I was born a man, my preferred pronoun is she—but it’s not a big thing to me.” Big Freedia embodies the spirit of New Orleans– the music, the dancing, and most of all, the energy. Freedia’s music make it feel like it’s Mardi Gras all the time, like you’re drunk without a sip of liquor.
Why You Should Know Her: There’s no one doing it like Big Freedia RN. If you’re craving the greatest dance party of eternity, turn on “Azz Everywhere,” and you’ll start the perfect pregame immediately. If you’re looking for an artist that’s sex and gender positive, look no further. Freedia creates a female positive space at her shows, clearing the way for women to express themselves without dudes awkwardly leering, because eff the male gaze. You know you go to the clurb to dance, even if every guy in the building is convinced that you’re actually there for them to rub against you. While the reality is that you’re not so into stranger dangers lurking on your bottom, there’s always the threat of creepers when you’re out. At a Freedia concert, you’re free to twerk harder (and better) than MiCy, with no repercussions. All hail Big Freedia, Queen Diva.
