As a former sorority girl, I know all of the stereotypes that go along with Greek life. We pay for our friends, we’re vapid, dodo bird human beings (probably blonde), who are uptight and pearl clutching (if you need an image, see above). After spending four years in a sorority, I know that none of that is true, just like this video is a giant, steaming, crock of bologna, “I Can’t Even.” The biggest upset of all? I don’t know a single sorority girl who would vehemently turn down a cocktail… unless, that is, the guys in question were total creepazoids who resembled the likes of Redfoo.
You might remember Redfoo from your Zumba class, or from freshman year when you thought “Party Rock Anthem” was totally your song (only, of course, after copious amounts of alcohol). This gem of a song has enlightening lyrics like, “You’re annoying bitch, because you’re talking,” and “Girl I’m sipping on this drink, trying to see what you got, not hear what you think.” That’s such beautiful, movie, songwriting. Redfoo is truly the voice of a generation. The sorority girl in question was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at Northwestern, and I can’t help but think that she should’ve given Redfoo a piece of her mind, because she obviously has one.
Unfortunately, this video dropped at the exact worst moment in human history. With students carrying mattresses around Columbia to raise awareness about sexual violence, videos highlighting the harassment women face on the street every day making the rounds on social media, and Queen Bey standing in front of lights that declare her a feminist, the world is taking a turn for the feminist, and I can only hope that’s reflected in music. Even Taylor Swift is finally admitting she’s a feminist, with a little bit of help from Lena Dunham. It’s no longer cool to be a misogynistic d-bag, in real life or in the music industry, but it looks like Redfoo missed the memo. When it comes to this music video, I can’t even.
