Another week, another segment from John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight that gets ridiculously real. This week’s topic: how women don’t feel safe online.
Maybe it’s because it’s fairly anonymous, but people feel like they can say anything on the internet. That includes threatening women, putting up private information and photos, and just plain harassment.
Oliver highlighted women like Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu, and Amanda Hess who have been affected by dangerous threats to the point of involving police. “It can potentially affect any woman who makes the mistake of having a thought in her mind, and then vocalizing it online,” Oliver said. “If you’re thinking, ‘Well, come on, that doesn’t seem like that big a problem,’ well, congratulations on your white penis.”
It’s a little lengthy, but we promise it’s worth watching, sharing, and talking about.
KUDOS for John Oliver to shedding light on this topic that is often swept under the rug.
