I’ve been laughing for ten years at this news. It’s just so…ridiculous?
To clarify, chicken fries were a menu item at Burger King that was sold between 2005 and 2012. It was a fan favorite. In January 2012, Buzzfeed posted an article entitled “35 Foods From Your Childhood That Are Extinct Now,” amping up the nostalgia factor of the famed chicken fries. So much so, the chief marketing officer of Burger King, Eric Hirschhorn, took notice in the spike of chicken fries mentions online.
That was only the beginning.
A few months later, there was a bigger surge in mentions when Liam Payne of One Direction tweeted:
I’m so fulllllll!!! Think I just ate my body weight in chicken fries and sides owwwwww
— Liam (@Real_Liam_Payne) May 31, 2014
However, it’s important to note that chicken fries hadn’t been on the menu for a couple of years. Perhaps it was a typo on Payne’s part and he was eating “chicken AND fries,” but the tweet found itself with more than 94,000 retweets, further indicating that the popularity of the retired chicken fries had not diminished.
I’m laughing harder now because the singer wasn’t available for comment about the tweet. ARE FRIED FOODS NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU, PAYNE!?
Last summer, however, saw the return of the famed chicken fries. Its limited time offer was so successful the company is adding them back to the permanent menu at a price of $3 for nine pieces.
The company saw their sales rise 7.9 percent in their stores in the United States and Canada, further proving that us North Americans act really f*cking weird when we’re nostalgic and hungry. Thanks, Liam!
