Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Are Being Sued By Former Interns For Wage Theft

The Olsen twins could be heading to court. A former intern, Shahista Lalani, has sued Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s company Dualstar Entertainment Group, saying she worked 50 hours a week but wasn’t paid. The lawsuit is seeking class action status and estimates up to 40 past and present interns could join.

Lalani says she worked from May to September 2012, spending her internship inputting data into spreadsheets, doing errands for paid employees, cutting patterns, photocopying, and sewing. Although MK & A were nice when they came in, Lalani says the interns were worked hard without breaks, and many of them were reduced to tears.

[The head technical designer] was very demanding. I was doing the work of three interns. I was talking to her all day, all night. E-mails at nighttime for the next day, like 10 pm at night.

Being on call 24/7 and working 50 hour weeks doesn’t sound fair, but speaking from my own experiences, internships are hard work for little pay. Not only did I not get paid for my internships – they actually cost me money when I look at transportation and other expenses. That’s just the way it is in some industries, media being one of them.

A spokeswoman from Dualstar says the company wasn’t aware of the lawsuit and declined to comment further.
