Long ago, Facebook decided to add a Like button, changing our online worlds. It was perfect for those times you wanted people to know you still didn’t hate them without spending precious time crafting a witty comment. Although we all have a few friends who are a little Like-happy at times (s0o0o many notifications), we can all agree the Like button is a great addition to the most irrelevant form of social media today. But what happens when you don’t like a post?
After years of demand, Facebook is finally working on a Dislike button.
CNBC reports that Mark Zuckerberg revealed the news during a company town hall Q&A session Tuesday. “People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it,” he said.
But don’t call it a dislike. Instead, the feature will be more like an “empathy” button to share support. “Not every moment is a good moment,” he said, according to VentureBeat. “If you share something that’s sad like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away, it may not be comfortable to like that post…I do think it’s important to give people more options than liking it.”
Think of it as the Facebook equivalent of a hug, which we all need sometimes.
