You’ve undoubtedly heard of the #FreetheNipple campaign by now. Everyone from Cara Delevingne, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna to normal girls are in support of is #FreetheNipple. While pictures of shirtless men are allowed on Instagram with no problem, for women it is not as simple. If a picture of a woman with her nipple exposed is posted on the app, it will most likely be taken down. Some pictures like women breastfeeding or of mastectomy scars are considered acceptable, while others are not.
After a year of the popular campaign, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom finally revealed the reasoning behind the censorship. Basically, we can blame Apple for this.
To keep the Instagram in the app store, a company needs to follow the rules of Apple. If an app is going to have nudity, then it needs to be labeled strictly for adults. This obviously is not an option for Instagram, which has users of all ages.
#FreetheNipple supporters may need to start targeting Apple.
