Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the 27-year-old Belgian who authorities say was the ringleader behind the attack on Paris Friday night which killed 127 people, died Wednesday in an early morning raid by security forces. French leaders confirmed his death Thursday morning, saying he was killed by a sniper.
According NBC News, Abaaoud and a female were killed during the raid of the Saint-Denis apartment they were hiding in while eight other men were taken into custody.
In addition to being the suspected mastermind of Friday’s attacks, Abaaoud had been linked to attacks in a Paris-bound high-speed train that were stopped by three Americans as well as a church near the French capital earlier this year.
Abaaoud’s family thought he was killed fighting in Syria last year, according to The New York Times. His middle-class Belgium family even celebrated his death. ”We are praying that Abdelhamid really is dead,” his older sister, Yasmina, said at the time. (You’ve really effed up if your family is celebrating your death.)
So long, a-hole.
