I have several “favorite” movies depending on my mood, but Dirty Dancing will always remain near the top of that list. I don’t know if it’s the summer vacation romance that gets me or if even my young self succumbed to Patrick Swayze’s charm, but I could watch this movie a million times and never get sick of it.
It’s one of those classic movies that should never be touched…so of course they’re remaking it…in musical form.
According to EW, Dirty Dancing is getting a remake with Abigail Breslin as the leading lady who was played by Jennifer Grey in the original. ABC has officially greenlit a new three-hour musical version of the 1987 film.
Yes, the fat kid from Little Miss Sunshine is the new Baby.
Don’t get me wrong – I love Scream Queens, but Breslin is inarguably the worst character/actress on that show. And can this girl sing and dance? I’ll be hate-watching this until she proves me wrong.
EW reports, “Executive producers include Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games) and Eleanor Bergstein, who also wrote the screenplay for the original movie. Jessica Sharzer (The L Word) will write the adaptation and Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) will direct. Also, the music will be done by Adam Anders and Peer Astrom (Glee) with Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton) as choreographer.”
Pretty much, ABC is trying to get in on the TV-musical phenomenon. NBC just scored an audience of 11.5 million with their live version of The Wiz last week, and Fox is following up with a live version of Grease airing in January.
Thoughts? Am I alone in already loathing this?
