Sia has one of the most recognizable voices in music, but if she passed by you on the street, you wouldn’t even know it. The singer behind hits like “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart” as well as the brains behind songs by Beyonce, Rihanna, and Britney Spears, is famous for hiding her face. During performances and on the red carpet, Sia hides behind hats and wigs because she doesn’t want to be recognizable for anything other than her work.
“If anyone besides famous people knew what it was like to be a famous person, they would never want to be famous,” Sia wrote in an op-ed for Billboard in October 2013 called “My Anti-Fame Manifesto (By Sia Furler).” “Imagine the stereotypical highly opinionated, completely uninformed mother-in-law character and apply it to every teenager with a computer in the entire world. Then add in all bored people, as well as people whose job it is to report on celebrities. Then, picture that creature, that force, criticizing you for an hour straight once a day, every day, day after day.”
But hiding your face all the time is bound to just drive curiosity, of course.
