Abrams started out in the movie business when he was 16, writing the music for the film Nightbeast during the 1980s. In 1990, during his senior year of college, J.J. teamed up with Jill Mazursky to write the film Taking Care Of Business. He then wrote a few other films during the ’90s.
In 1998, Abrams worked on the screenplay for the film Armageddon starring Bruce Willis and directed by Michael Bay. The film became a box office success, making over $550 million worldwide, but had mostly negative reviews, receiving a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That same year, Abrams ventured into the world of television with the series Felicity, which ran for four seasons.
In 2001, J.J. created and produced the series Alias, which ran for five seasons.

In 2009, Abrams brought Star Trek back to the big screen for the first time since 2002. The film was released May 8, 2009 and instantly became a hit with both movie goers and Star Trek fans alike, making over $385 million worldwide and has a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film not only became the largest opening for a Star Trek film, but also became the highest grossing Star Trek film of all time in the United States and Canada. The film became the seventh highest grossing movie of 2009.
Abrams also directed and produced the second movie of the Star Trek reboot series, Star Trek Into Darkness, in 2013. That movie eventually ended up beating the first movie for the highest grossing Star Trek film of all time, earning over $465 million worldwide.
In addition to the Star Trek series, Abrams also directed, produced, and wrote the film Super 8 and produced the second Mission: Impossible film he worked on, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, in 2011.
