Let’s be honest, few days are more horrible than the Monday after the holidays. All you can think about is how many more hours until you can go back to bed and how many shots of espresso you should ask your barista for until then. Yet Starbucks made an announcement this morning that might make your day a bit more tolerable.
Beginning Jan 5, Starbucks stores across the U.S., Canada, and some stores in Latin America will unveil the latte macchiato as a permanent addition to the menu. Basic white girls rejoice!
Just like your typical latte or cappuccino, the latte macchiato contains two ingredients: espresso and milk. Your barista starts by pouring steamed milk into your cup, then pours espresso from a tiny pitcher, ending with a little dot on top. But don’t be fooled. As pretty as it looks, this is for serious coffee drinkers. If you’re the type who prefers a little coffee with your cream and sugar, you should probably stick to the Frappuccino.
Although it sounds basic AF tbh, the dude that came up with this concoction just got a massive promotion and now has the dream job of coming up with new Starbucks drinks to deliver to the masses. What began as an off-menu item to serve to some regulars, catapulted into a full-blown career.
The coffee chain is hoping the latte macchiato matches the success of the flat white, a drink popular in Australia that the chain introduced around this time last year.
Angus Maxwell, a certified coffee master (no, I didn’t make that up) who works at a Starbucks in Brooklyn, recommends the drink for those wanting to graduate to something a bit more adult, if you will. “Anyone who likes just a bold drip coffee, maybe this is their entry into trying something with a little more milk.”
Looks like I know where I’ll be tomorrow.
