Ricky and Stephen Merchant first started out in the world of radio on Xfm London, an alternative radio station in London, in 1998.

In 2001, Ricky starred, wrote, created, and directed a show known as The Office, a mockumentary about the day to day lives of employees at a paper company. Despite its success, the show only lasted for two seasons and 12 episodes.

Ricky and Stephen Merchant returned to Xfm in August 2001 after the first season of The Office aired.

Ricky then toured the United Kingdom with two stand-up shows: Animals in 2003 and Politics in 2004. Both of these shows were recorded for release on DVD and television broadcast.

Ricky returned to the world of television with the series Extras in July 2005. Once again, the series only lasted for two seasons and 13 episodes. Although Extras did not become as popular as The Office, it did gain a cult following.

In December 2005, The Guardian (then called Guardian Unlimited), began offering free weekly podcasts of The Ricky Gervais Show, featuring Ricky, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilikington. Throughout January and February 2006 the podcast was consistently ranked the number-one podcast in the world. In 2007, the show earned the Guinness World Record title for “World’s Most-Downloaded Podcast”, having earned an average of 261,670 downloads per episode during its first month. Two more series, with six podcasts each, were released between February and September 2006.

In 2007, Ricky went on tour again with his third stand up tour Fame. The tour was so popular that, at one of his final destinations, tickets for his performance was reportedly sold out within 45 minutes of going on sale.

Ricky also made guest appearances in movies and TV shows including Valiant, Ghost Town, Night At The Museum, Stardust, The Simpsons (which he also wrote an episode for), Spongebob Squarepants, and the U.S. version of The Office.

Ricky began hosting the Golden Globe Awards in 2010. He would go on to host them again in 2011 and 2012.

That same year, Ricky’s radio show became an animated series entitled The Ricky Gervais Show. The show premiered on HBO in February 2010 and went on for 3 seasons and 39 episodes.

Ricky and Stephen Merchant would go on to write two more British comedy series: An Idiot Abroad in 2010 and Life’s Too Short in 2011. Ricky also wrote, created, directed, and starred in the series Derek in 2012.

In 2010, he was named of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.

Ricky also continued to make appearances in TV shows and movies including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, Muppets Most Wanted, and Spy Kids: All The Time In The World.

Ricky returned to hosting the Golden Globes for a fourth time in 2016. He also has two films he is directing and writing currently in the works: Special Correspondents and Life On The Road, about the life of his Office character, David Brent, 15 years after the events of the series.

With two upcoming movies in the works, we’ll be sure to keep an eye for more of Ricky’s antics in the world of comedy.

Having being director for two films in 2016, Ricky is now working on the animated action comedy Blazing Samurai as the voice of Ika Chu. But that’s just the beginning. For the first time in seven years, Ricky is going back on a stand-up tour beginning in Cardiff, UK and ending in Los Angeles, CA. He describes his Humanity Tour as his angriest yet and, if his past tours are anything to go by, you’ll want to save yourself a front row seat.

The upcoming special of Ricky Gervais is called ‘Humanity’ and already got a Netflix premiere date.
