Well, this is certainly one way to begin 2016.
On Friday, Dustin Diamond checked into an Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, jail to serve his four month sentence for a related 2014 barroom stabbing in a Milwaukee suburb.
Diamond, who played the class clown Screech on Saved By The Bell, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct after he stabbed a man with a switchblade on Christmas Day. He delayed entering jail by appealing his conviction in June. In December, he withdrew his appeal of the disorderly conduct conviction.
At the time, the 39-year-old actor argued that he pulled the knife in order to defend himself and his fiancee, Amanda Schutz. Diamond believed that by pulling out the switchblade, he would be able to diffuse the fight. He said, “I figured it would take the fight out of the people. Casey didn’t even know he was injured, so how would I?”
Schutz was later found guilty of disorderly conduct as well.
The pair was ordered to pay $1,500 in restitution to Casey Smet who suffered a non-life-threatening wound.
“I sincerely apologize to everyone involved. This was the single most terrifying experience of my life … This is all I’ve been able to think about for the last six months.”
