After receiving bit parts in TV shows and movies such as Doc and Big Fish, Miley’s breakthrough role came as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana in the hit Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. The series premiered in March of 2006 and became an instant hit, propelling Miley into stardom as both an actress and a singer.

The series released four soundtrack albums. The first soundtrack, Hannah Montana, skyrocketed to number one on the Billboard 200 in 2006 but was surpassed in opening sales the following year by Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley CyrusThe first album sold over three million copies sold in the US and the RIAA certified this album platinum three times.

The first album also launched a Best of Both Worlds North American tour in 2007. Tickets for the tour sold out in minutes and were traded for up to $2,500 and an average of $214, well above their $26–$65 face value. In 2008, the tour was adapted into a 3D concert film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.

In July 2008, Miley released her second studio album Breakout. Miley co-wrote eight out of twelve songs on the album, including the hit single “7 Things.” In November, Miley launched her film career by lending her voice to the animated film Bolt, co-starring John Travolta.

Miley also became one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2008.

In 2007, Miley earned $18 million. The following year, she earned $25 million and was ranked number 35 on Forbes magazine’s Celebrity 100 list.

In 2009, Miley starred in the film adaptation of her hit Disney Channel film, Hannah Montana: The Movie. The film was released April 10, 2009 and became a financial success, making over $155 million in the box office. The film’s soundtrack contained twelve songs performed by Miley, including its lead single “The Climb,” which became a Top 40 hit in twelve countries.

Miley’s first role outside of the Disney franchise was as Ronnie in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Last Song, opposite her future on again/off again boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. The film was released March 31, 2010 and made $89 million at the box office, despite being panned by critics. In September 2010, Miley was ranked no. 10 in Billboard’s first ever list of “Music’s Hottest Minors” of 2010. Forbes also ranked her at 13 on their Celebrity 100, earning $48 million. From June 2009 to June 2010, she was the 4th highest earner under 30 years old and the youngest on the list. At age 17, Miley was named No. 19 on the “Top 20 World’s Richest Female Singers of All Time” list after earning over $100 million in five years, making her the youngest female artist on the list.

After four seasons and 98 episodes, Hannah Montana ended its run in January 2011. Miley was paid $15,000 per episode, making her the sixth-highest paid child star on television.

During production of The Last Song and the last season of Hannah Montana, Miley record her third studio album Can’t Be Tamed, which included her single by the same name. The album was released in June 2010, debuting at number 3 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 106,000 copies. However, it became Miley’s lowest first week sales and her first studio album not to peak atop the Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 343,000 copies in the United States and failed to receive an RIAA certification.

Following the release of Can’t Be Tamed, Miley turned her attention towards acting. She made guest appearances on TV shows such as SNL, Punk’d, and Two and a Half Men and starred in the film LOL, opposite Demi Moore, in 2012.

She once again ranked in Billboard’s “Music’s Hottest Minors List” in 2011 (#21) and in 2012 (#18). In 2011, she was named No. 1 on the Top 10 Richest Teens in Hollywood, with $120 million.
