The powerhouse vocalist got her breakthrough role as Cat Valentine on the popular Nickelodeon show Victorious in 2009. The premiere garnered 5.7 million viewers, the second-highest debut for a Nickelodeon live-action series.

With the success of the show, Ariana was paid $9,000 per episode during the first season. She also got to showcase her vocal chops on two songs soundtracks for the show, “Give Up,” “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” and “L.A Boyz.”

Ariana’s first single, “Put Your Hearts Up,” was released in 2011. Though the single later went on to become certified gold by the RIAA, it was not the way she wanted to introduce her self. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Grande expressed her disapproval of that time in her career.

“It was geared toward kids and felt so inauthentic and fake,” she said. “That was the worst moment of my life.”

Ariana went on to star in the spin-off series Sam & Cat. The show debuted with 4.2 million viewers but was canceled after just one season on July 17, 2014. The reason behind the cancellation is unclear.

With that came her focus on completing her debut album, Yours Truly, which was released on August 20,2013.

The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 138,000 copies in its first week. The hit single, “The Way” ft. Mac Miller, became her first Billboard Hot 100. The album also featured singles “Baby I” (which debuted at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100) and “Right There” ft. Big Sean (which debuted at number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100).

Ariana ranked number four on Billboard’s “21 Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors 2013” list surpassing artists such as Lorde, Cher Lloyd, Austin Mahone, Tori Kelly, and Fifth Harmony.

The singer opened for Justin Bieber on three of his tour dates during his Believe Tour before embarking on her own journey. To support Yours Truly, the singer embarked on an 11-date tour, The Listening Sessions, that grossed nearly $680,000.

Though it did not debut on the charts, Christmas Kisses, Ariana’s first Christmas EP, was released on December 2013 and sold 405,000 copies worldwide.

My Everything, Ariana’s sophomore album was released on August 25, 2014, and sold 169,000 copies in its first week making it her second consecutive number one album in the U.S.

The album’s lead single, “Problem,” featuring Iggy Azalea debuted at number three on the Billboard  Hot 100 and became Ariana’s first number one single in the U.K., making British history as the first song to reach number one solely based on streams and sales.

The second single, “Break Free,” featuring Zedd peaked at number four on the Hot 100. She later performed the song at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards where she won the award for Best Pop Video for “Problem.”

Ariana also provided guest vocals on the Jessie J’s hit song, “Bang Bang” along with Nicki Minaj which reached number three on the charts.

She became one of the only female artists to have three consecutive top ten singles on the Hot 100 during the same week with “Problem,” “Bang Bang” and “Break Free.”

Ariana rounded out the year by being musical performer for the season 40 premiere of Saturday Night Live and and being a part of the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1. She was featured on Major Lazer’s song “All My Love.”

The soundtrack debuted at number 18 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
