11 Reasons You Should Drink More Tequila

Move over red wine. It turns out that tequila has just as many health benefits, if not more. YASSSS. This is the greatest news I’ve heard, possibly ever. Next time you’re at the bar with your friends, throw a couple shots back and prepare to feel healthy AF.

Although tequila is not considered a health food, some of these facts may surprise you:

1. It can help you lose weight.

No, I wouldn’t replace the gym with tequila; however, it has been linked to amping up your metabolism and dissolving fats. It also contains agavins, a particular kind of sugar that’s less refined and doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. As a result, many of the calories pass through the system unused as opposed to other alcohol sugars. 🙌💃

2. It doesn’t give you a hangover.

That is, if you drink the highest quality stuff. Jose Cuervo doesn’t apply here. You have to drink “100% agave” tequila to reap this benefit. Cheaper brands are filled with other sugar alcohols, which will result in a killer headache the next morning.

3. It relaxes you and helps you sleep.

Relaxation is one of the positive side effects of tequila drinking; a small amount (1 to 1.5 ounces) before bedtime can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. That being said, I don’t recommend doing this every night…

4. It won’t make you feel as fat as other alcohol.

Ahem, beer.

5. It helps deliver necessary drugs to the rest of the body.

Tequila acts as a ‘drug delivery system.’ In other words, the acid in your stomach typically breaks them down before they can even hit your intestines. Why is this an issue? Because it decreases the drug’s effectiveness. Tequila serves as a protective barrier of these drugs as they work their way into your system.

6. It fights high cholesterol.

Agavins lower triglycerides in the blood and levels of cholesterol.

7. It may be used to treat the common cold.

In the 1930’s, doctors in Mexico used tequila as part of a concoction to ease cold symptoms: 5 ounce of tequila blanco; .5 ounce of agave nectar; .5 ounce of fresh lime juice.

8. It’s a respectable party favor.

Bud Light and Fireball are so college. Show up with a bottle of tequila, and you’re guaranteed to make a solid first impression.

9. It may lower your risk of dementia.

The BBC reported that having a certain amount of drinks per week reduced the risk of dementia. However, if you have more than the recommended amount, you’re at a higher risk.

10. It can prevent Type 2 Diabetes.

The fructans found in tequila are non-digestible and act as fiber. By passing through the body undigested, it avoids the dangerous blood sugar spike as well as stimulates insulin production.

11. It relieves physical pain.

Tequila dilates blood vessels, which results in better blood flow and ultimately reduces pain. It may also (temporarily) reduce emotional pain.

So there’s your science lesson for the day! TBH, if they taught this in class, I’d pass with flying colors. Moral of today’s lesson plan? If you ever can’t decide between ordering beer or a margarita, go with the latter. Tequila is always the answer.
