An Artist Dressed Syrian Refugees As Disney Princesses For This Powerful Reason

Saint Hoax is a Syrian artist and satirist who twists pop cultural icons into important messages about animal cruelty, domestic violence, Islamophobia, and more.

Most recently, the artist has drawn upon Disney princesses for a project that calls attention to the refugee crisis. He traveled to Akkar, Lebanon to begin a series called “Once Upon a War,” where the mission is to allow these girls to escape for a day into a world where Prince Charming and fairy godmothers offer a sense of hope; he asked them about their hopes and dreams while they played dress up.

“I wanted the girls to freely express themselves and tell their own stories without being censored or interviewed,” Saint Hoax explained. “They loved the idea of sharing their stories with the world. They never got to do that before.”

Since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, 4.6 million Syrians have become refugees and an additional 6.6 million are displaced in Syria. According to World Vision, half of those people are children. As a result, many young girls have their education disrupted and are exposed to sexual violence and displacement.

Saint Hoax hopes the project will drive donations to Malaak.
