Laguna Beach’s bad girl is all grown up. Kristin Cavallari is now a wife and mother of three, but that’s not stopping us from stopping everything to watch reruns of the MTV reality show about rich kids in California. Luckily for us, Kristin is spilling details about her beach days in her new book, Balancing in Heels.
I know we are still all #TeamLC, but Kristin definitely wasn’t the villain she was made out to be on the show.
See the best secrets without reading the book below.
1. Kristin’s relationship with Stephen Colletti was very real.
We all know that Laguna Beach had its fair share of staged moments, but Kristin and Stephen were as in love as high schoolers can be.
“He was my entire world, and we loved hard and fought hard,” she writes. “Surprisingly, the producers had a bigger effect, as they controlled and mapped our lives more than we were aware. One of the most hurtful things they did was pressure Stephen to spend time with another girl from our show, Lauren, while he and I were dating.”
“Normal high school relationships are dramatic enough, but ours now had the added pressure of being seen by MTV viewers across the country as well as being manipulated by the show’s producers, a set of adults were very suddenly involved in the intricacies of our lives,” Kristin shared.
2. Some conversations on Laguna Beach were totally faked.
“There was certainly a good deal to the show that wasn’t ‘real,’ but as kids we got caught up in it anyway,” Kristin reveals. “It was easy to go along with made-up situations…to keep things interesting, words were dubbed, scenes filmed months apart were shown in the same episode as though they were concurrent, and phone calls were faked (I would literally be on the phone with no one or sometimes with a producer).”
3. Here’s why Stephen infamously called Kristin a “slut” in Cabo.
Who could forget that trip?
“The fact that I didn’t take life too seriously and was a bit of a party animal didn’t often put me in a good light,” she shares. “On a trip to Cabo San Lucas, when Stephen and I were actually broken up, I jumped up on the bar to dance with my girlfriends. Then I kissed a guy I was seeing at the time, completely unaware of how my actions were affecting Stephen (only teenagers are able to be so self-involved!). Not one of my better moments! Then Stephen started shouting ‘slut!’ at me from across the bar. It was a scene. There are certainly some clips I wish I could erase from everyone’s memory.”
4. LB producers would put her in situations that they knew would cause her to go crazy.
“I was only 17! I had some anger stored up from my parents’ divorce and my new stepfamilies, which the producers saw,” Kristin explains. “They put me in situations where they knew I would react. I was a fighter back then: When I felt threatened, I acted. So when I felt the producers were trying to break up my relationship, I ended up becoming exactly what they wanted from the get-go…When I acted out, they won.”
No wonder we all thought Kristin was such a bitch.
5. Her reality TV life led to meeting her husband, quarterback Jay Cutler.
“When I was in the middle of filming The Hills, I got a phone call from my publicist saying that Jay Cutler wanted to fly me to Chicago and take me on a date,” she recalls. Except it wasn’t Jay himself…it was a teammate trying to play wingman. “A year later, a year in which I grew up a lot and felt serious about meeting a good man…I called up my publicist and got us family passes to meet Jay after the game.”
They now have three kids, Camden Jack, Jaxon Wyatt, and Saylor James, together!
