2015 was undoubtedly The Weeknd’s biggest year yet. With the release of his second album, Beauty Behind the Madness, he has officially made a name for himself in the music industry. 2010 – 2011
Abel Tesfaye’s, AKA The Weeknd, first taste of exposure came through YouTube. In 2010, he released the songs “What You Need,” “Loft Music,” and “The Morning.” He subsequently received attention from numerous online platforms and celebrities including Drake.
In 2011, The Weeknd released his debut mixtape, House of Balloons, through his website and received critical acclaim. The song “High for This” went on to be featured in the promotion for the final season of the HBO show Entourage and the title track was listed as number 57 on Pitchfork Media’s list of the top 100 songs of 2011. In addition, “The Morning” was listed at number 15.
The mixtape was nominated for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.
The singer’s second mixtape, Thursday, was released on August 18, 2011 and also received positive reviews from music critics. Echoes of Silence, The Weeknd’s third mixtape, was released on December 21, 2011.
The three 2011 mixtapes became known as the Balloons Trilogy.
2012 – 2014
In September 2012, The Weeknd signed with Republic Records, which led to the formal release of Trilogy, a compilation of the three mixtapes. The album charted at number four on the US Billboard 200 and sold 86,000 copies in its first week.
Kiss Land, his debut studio album, was released in September 2013. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, selling 96,000 copies in its first week.
The Weeknd appeared on the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in the songs “Devil May Cry” and is featured in “Elastic Heart” by Sia.
He went on to join Justin Timberlake on “The 20/20 Experience World Tour” for six shows. The tour grossed $231 .6 million from 136 shows, making it the second-highest grossing tour of 2014 as well as one of the highest grossing tours of the decade.
In June 2014, The Weeknd embarked on the King of the Fall Tour along with Jhene Aiko and ScHoolboy Q.
To close out the year, Ariana Grande teamed up with him on the hit song “Love Me Harder” from her album, My Everything. The song peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and as of March 2016, the song has sold 1.2 million copies in the US.
2015 – 2016
On June 8, 2015, The Weeknd released “Can’t Feel My Face.” The song peaked at number one in numerous countries and was nominated for two Grammys, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
During the week of June 25, 2015, he became the first artist to hold the three top spots on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart with “Can’t Feel My Face” at number one, “The Hills” at number two, and “Earned It” at number three.
Beauty Behind the Madness, was released on August 28, 2015, and spent three weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 412,000 copies in its first week.
To support the album, The Weeknd embarked on “The Madness Fall Tour” with Travis Scott, Banks, and Halsey.
During the week of September 8, 2015, he became the first artist in seven years with two songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 top three spots with “Can’t Feel My Face” at number two and “The Hills” at number three.
Beauty Behind the Madness was the most streamed album of 2015 with over 60 million listeners.
Appearing as a guest on numerous songs this year, including Kanye West‘s “FML,” it’s no wonder The Weeknd has been able to get to the point he’s at right now. Hard work really does pay off.
The Weeknd has been riding his huge successes from 2016. Following his album Starboy, he is planning his Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour starting February 17th and ending on June 9th.
He will also star in H&M’s Spring 2017 campaign, which features collaborative pieces with the Weeknd’s Xo brand. The menswear collection will be available March 2, 2017.
