On Saturday, April 23, Mario Licato was punched in the face and knocked unconscious by an attacker because he looked similar to Shia LeBeouf.
Yes, you read that correctly and yes, it is as crazy as it sounds.
In an interview with Gothamist, Licato recalled that he was exiting a subway station a little after 8 p.m. on Manhattan’s Lower East Side when he was unexpectedly assaulted.
“I was walking up the stairs. I had my head down – there were people in front of me… I didn’t even see the guy. I just see his fist coming towards me,” Licato stated to Gothamist. “It knocked me, and while I was falling down the stairs, all I hear was ‘This is because you look exactly like Shia LeBeouf!”
Once Licato regained consciousness, a couple came to his aid and asked him, “Did you know that guy?” They informed him that the aggressor was in his mid-20s, muscular and about 6 foot to 6 foot 3.
Other eyewitnesses reported that the LeBeouf-despising culprit ran downstairs to catch a train after knocking Licato out. Licato, understandably, is still troubled by the attack.
Licato said that he has been compared to LeBeouf for years now. However, this is the first time that his similar appearance to the actor has resulted in violence.
“[I’ve been told I look like Shia] so many times,” Licato said. “That’s why I knew I wasn’t crazy. I got it three years ago. I’ve been stopped on the street before, at least 10 times in my life.”
Now Licato can’t stop wondering what LeBeouf did to the assailant to cause such a violent reaction. We’re wondering the exact same thing.
I mean, LeBeouf is a weird guy, but just because someone is odd doesn’t mean you should go punch him. You learn that stuff in Kindergarten, man.
