If you haven’t heard of Hailee Steinfeld before now, get to know her because this actress is on her way to the top. In the last few years, she’s proven that she can act, sing, and deliver Shakespearean verse in a way that will make your heart melt. Steinfeld has been in major films such as Pitch Perfect 2, True Grit, Ender’s Game, and the 2013 rendition of Romeo and Juliet. But her newest role, Nadine in The Edge of Seventeen, captures all the angst of truly struggling through high school.
Nadine is the younger sibling of one of the most popular guys in her school. Though she went through an ugly duckling phase (don’t we all?), she’s pretty content with hanging out with her best friend Krista and secretly crushing on hottie Nick from afar. That is, until Nadine accidentally finds out that Krista, played by Haley Lu Richardson, and her brother have been secretly hooking up. After they began publicly dating, Krista joins the in-crowd and Nadine is basically alone.
She struggles to find comfort in her mother and opens up to her teacher, played by Woody Harrelson, who blows her off pretty badly. But nothing quite relieves the crushing feeling of losing your best friend and losing control of your life, something Steinfeld portrays excellently in four minutes. It’s not as cliche as it sounds. In fact, you’ll probably find moments where you find Nadine #relatable (like forcing herself to socialize at a party). But if you don’t believe me, see for yourself. Here’s the full trailer:
The Edge of Seventeen will be in theaters September 30th, just as the school year starts.
