Maryland’s Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School is taking a stand. In a vote 4-1, the school’s Student Government Association decided to make their Homecoming Court gender-neutral, meaning any student could be king or queen regardless of their gender.
“What student leaders are doing is a step to help ensure that all students have a sense of belonging at B-CC,” principal Donna Redmond Jones told the Post. Jones believes that being inclusive of all genders adds to the event without overlooking the titles other students find traditional and continue to appreciate.
“It provides an opportunity for all students to be involved in something that was exclusionary,” B-CC SGA President Jacob Rains said. “It is really not our job, especially with a gender-neutral and transgender population at B-CC, to tell people that boys have to be kings and girls have to be queens. Who are we to put people into those categories?”
Many students have already announced their approval of the vote via social media, but Rains still apologized for not explaining the decision-making process clearly.
SGA also announced the addition of another gender-neutral bathroom, so really, they’re just winning at life in general.
