Zayn Malik‘s autobiography Zayn dropped today, and while we knew there was going to be a ton of juicy gossip about One Direction, we didn’t realize just how personal he was going to get. But after the book’s release, Malik dropped a pretty big bombshell: he suffered from an eating disorder during his time in the mega boy band.
“When I look back at the images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was,” he wrote in one part of the book. “Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder … It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that, I’d just go for days – sometimes two or three days straight – without eating anything at all. It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognise it for what it was.”
Malik elaborated on the comments during an interview with the Associated Press, saying that while he was never formally diagnosed, he realized the harm he was doing to his body later on.
“It was just more down to losing track of, you know, actually eating, and being super busy and getting caught up with other things that 17 or 18-year-old do, which normally entails them going out, drinking and partying,” he explained. He also took to Instagram prior to the autobiography’s release, warning his followers that parts of the book are heavy, but he’s now in a good place.
“As you guys know I am releasing my book tomorrow,” he wrote. “This book is my diary of a period of time that I would like to share with you all. I hope that there are things in the book that contextualize some of the moments and memories we have all shared together. There are things I address in the book that are very personal to me, things that I have never told anyone, things I still find hard to talk about. It’s a part of a journey that I am still on. The good news is today, I am inspired, I am healthy and I am grateful. Enjoy.”
Zayn we love you and love how honest you are about this time in your life. We’re glad you’re happy and healthy, and continue to post the most adorable PDA photos with Gigi Hadid, even if they do make us cry hysterically at times. Keep it up.
