The world held their breath when it was announced that actress and writer Carrie Fisher went into cardiac arrest during a international flight on Friday. Though there was hope she would make a full recovery, Fisher passed away this morning. Known and loved for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, from A New Hope in 1977 to The Force Awakens in 2015Fisher transformed an iconic, decades-long role. She also managed to write the books Postcards from the Edge and The Princess Diarist. She is survived by her mother, Debbie Reynolds, and daughter, Scream Queens actress, Billie Lourd. Leaving behind a legacy that will last for centuries, here are Fisher’s top ten influential quotes.

1. “I don’t want to be thought of as a survivor because you have to continue getting involved in difficult situations to show off that particular gift, and I’m not interested in doing that anymore.”

2. “What I always wanna tell young people now: Pay attention. This isn’t gonna happen again. Rather than try to understand it as it’s going along, have it go along for a while and then understand it.”

3. “There’s a line I have that our family was designed more for public than for private. But there are definitely some things that are only mine. I am someone who dreams at night, and you don’t know what I’m dreaming.”

4. “Because I grew up in a public family, I never really had a private life. And so if those issues are going to be public, I would rather them to be public the way I’ve experienced them rather than someone else assuming things about me. It’s freeing to do it. Shame is not something I aspire to.”

5. “I got to be the only girl in an all-boy fantasy, and it’s a great role for women. She’s a very proactive character and gets the job done. So if you’re going to get typecast as something, that might as well be it for me.”

6. “We treat beauty like an accomplishment, and that is insane. Everyone in L.A. says, ‘Oh you look good,’ and you listen for them to say you’ve lost weight. It’s never ‘How are you?’ or ‘You seem happy!’”

7. “You’re only as sick as your secrets. Either it comes out their way or my way. I talk about myself behind my back. And I’m funny about it.”

8. “I don’t want to be caught … ashamed of anything. And because generally someone who has bipolar doesn’t have just bipolar, they have bipolar, and they have a life and a job and a kid and a hat and parents, so its not your overriding identity, it’s just something that you have, but not the only thing – even if it’s quite a big thing.”

9. “No motive is pure. No one is good or bad-but a hearty mix of both. And sometimes life actually gives to you by taking away.”

10. “I rarely cry. I save my feelings up inside me like I have something more specific in mind for them. I am waiting for the exact perfect situations and then BOOM! I’ll explode in a light show of feeling and emotion – a pinata stuffed with tender nuances and pent-up passions.”
