We know Valentine’s Day is a day for appreciating all of the couples, but your fave ladies need some appreciation too. In Parks & Recreation, Leslie Knope gives us a special day to hang out with our girlfriends. On February 13th you can celebrate Galentine’s Day with all your lady friends. And just what is this holiday? Knope sums it up nicely:
“It’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13 my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
Leslie Knope helped teach us that women should be allowed to be themselves. She was all for women’s empowerment and did not let anyone stop her from working hard in a man’s world.
All ladies deserve some recognition regardless of whether they’re in a relationship or single. It’s all about loving yourself and loving your friends. Here are a few quotes that will help get you hyped for Galentine’s Day.
“Hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses. Ovaries before brovaries.” – Amy Poehler
“I think that is one reason why women live longer than men. Friendship between women is different than friendship between men. We talk about different things. We delve deep. We go under, even if we haven’t seen each other for years… It’s my women friends that keep starch in my spine and without them, I don’t know where I would be. We have to just hang together and help each other.” – Jane Fonda
“We have to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, work. But work has to come third.” – Amy Poehler
“If you can find a group of women, any age, who are supportive and kind and love you, that’s the best. I have a group of girlfriends that I would lay in front of a bus for. They’ve picked me up through really, really bad times and I can definitely say I’ve done the same for them.” – Katie Lowes
“Whether you’re throwing up or breaking up, you want your girlfriends right there! I don’t trust women who don’t go to their girlfriends.” – Drew Barrymore
“I feel there’s so much pressure, especially for women, to declare what their life’s going to be and what their career is, and ‘are you married yet? Are you single? But you’re 30.’ And girlfriends are so important. You can have a boyfriend or husband when you’re 30, but you still need your girlfriends.” – Kristen Wiig
“Abandon the cultural myth that all female friendships must be bitchy, toxic, or competitive. This myth is like heels and purses — pretty but designed to SLOW women down.”– Roxanne Gay
“Girls get competitive, as though there’s only one spot in the world for everything — but that’s not true. We need to stick together and see there’s more to life than pleasing men. It’s important not to cut yourself off from female friendships. I think sometimes girls get scared of other girls, but you need each other.” – Zooey Deschanel
“I don’t know what I would have done so many times in my life if I hadn’t had my girlfriends. They have literally gotten me up out of bed, taken my clothes off, put me in the shower, dressed me, said, ‘Hey, you can do this,’ put my high heels on and pushed me out the door!” – Reese Witherspoon
“Oh my God, my girlfriends are everything to me. They celebrate with you, they cry with you, they hold you when you need to be held. They laugh with you. They’re mean with you! They’re always there, and it’s just a priceless thing to have.” – Jennifer Lopez
