Deshauna Barber Crowned the Next Miss USA Wearing Her Natural Hair as a Tribute to Her Mother

Twitter

Deshauna Barber lost her mother to cancer just three months after she was crowned Miss USA 2016, so it probably wasn’t easy to pass on her crown on Mother’s Day this year. However, theĀ first lieutenant in the Army Reserves honored her mother in a very special way.

Before taking her final walk as Miss USA, Deshauna announced that she would wear her hair naturally in an afro as a tribute to her mother, who also had an afro. She looked radiant in a yellow gown and her gorgeous hair.

Twitter was living for it too.

Loved your afro tribute for your mom, @deshaunabarber. You looked gorg. #deshaunabarber #MissUSA #MissUSA2016 #MissUSA2017 pic.twitter.com/XlTGqM3V2C

To top things off, Deshauna passed the crown to anotherĀ MissĀ District of Columbia: Kara McCullough. Back-to-back wins! (And shout out to Miss New Jersey, the runner-up…although I’m very biased.)

JUST IN: Back to back win for District of Columbia as Kara McCullough won Miss USA 2017 title. Last year, was Deshauna Barber. pic.twitter.com/JJEN4Fx1Nn
