If you want to make something happen nowadays, your first thought is to probably make a petition. For diehard Wonder Woman fans, that’s exactly what they’re doing. According to Refinery29, fans created a Change petition to officially make the superhero bi, preferably before the sequel film is released.
The petition already has 1,678 supporters, with a goal of 2,500. Gianna Collier-Pitts, a recent NYU grad, is reportedly behind the petition. You can read the powerful essay she penned on the petition site.
Since the release of Wonder Woman, it’s been hard to escape the film from the headlines. It set off a call to action to boost representation of female superheroes in pop culture, raised questions about pay disparities, and the film is labeled as the most successful DC Universe movie up to this point. The director, Patty Jenkins, is also set to take the lead on the second film.
Spoiler alert, after the loss of her love interest, Steve Trevor, in the first film, it would be perfect timing for Diana to further explore her sexuality in the sequel film. It has long been debated that Diana was bisexual, long before there were talks of making a film. This fact was alluded to in the comics, and fans want it acknowledged on the big screens. Diana grew up on an all-female island, so it only seems natural that she’d have strong relationships with women.
If the petition fulfills its purpose, it’d revolutionize the film industry and positively impact the LGBTQ community. There are few sexual minorities represented in the film industry, and not always accurately. What some need is a strong figure to look up to and who can pave the path for more diverse character developments in the Hollywood industry.
