4 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Winner Lex Ishimoto

Season 14 of So You Think You Can Dance came to an end last night with contemporary dancer Lex Ishimoto rising to the #1 spot as America’s favorite dancer. The season showcased some of the most talented ever seen on the SYTYCD stage, and Ishimoto was one dancer who certainly never left us disappointed. There’s a lot you may not know about him, however. While he may not be a household name quite yet, the 19-year-old has been a dance legend in the making for many years now.

1. He starred in Billy Elliot.

At age 13, Ishimoto joined the Broadway National Tour of Billy Elliot playing the leading role of Billy. Alternating the role with a few other boys, he traveled across the country for months, showing off his ballet skills to tens of thousands of people. Who knew he could sing, too? He was even nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for his role in the production. From an early age, Ishimoto was already a triple threat.

2. He toured with Travis Wall.

Emmy Winner Travis Wall is an icon in the dance world. After getting his start on Season Two of SYTYCD, Wall has gone on to have an amazing career in the industry. One of his biggest milestones was creating his own dance company, Shaping Sound. It’s a dancers dream to be a part of the company and at age 18, Ishimoto had his dream fulfilled. He toured with Shaping Sound this past spring in a major role in the production After The Curtain. And on last night’s finale, we even got to see him perform a piece from the show with Wall himself. Can anyone say #CareerGoals?

3. He’s danced with Gaby Diaz before.

We loved seeing Ishimoto paired with All-Star Gaby Diaz this season. What many don’t know is that they had performed together before! Diaz was also a part of Shaping Sound’s spring tour, and the two even tap danced a number together during the show. Sitting front row for Shaping Sound: After The Curtain and seeing the two dancers live was a moment I’ll never forget. Here’s to hoping they perform together on the upcoming SYTYCD tour!

4. He’s dating a fellow SYTYCD contestant.

That’s right! Talk about star-crossed lovers. Ishimoto and fellow SYTYCD contestant Taylor Sieve have been dating since before the show began, and we are #obsessed. While they kept their relationship off the stage for most of the competition, a contemporary routine by Mia Michaels had them performing hot and heavy for all to see. We just can’t get enough of the duo and hope to see them dancing together more in the future.
