Rick and Morty is a cartoon show on Adult Swim and their fan base is as loyal as they come. Rick is a scientist who takes his grandson, Morty on inter-dimensional adventures.
During the third season premiere the show made a joke about McDonald’s very limited Szechuan Sauce. The sauce was created for McDonald’s promotion for Disney’s Mulan and was released for a limited time in 1998. But ever since the mention of the now non-existent sauce in Rick and Morty, fans have been demanding for it to come back.
McDonald’s heard the fans outcry for the sauce, it was hard to ignore, and they decided to re-release the sauce for one day, October 7 at select McDonald’s.
Fans turned out for the Szechuan Sauce and McDonald’s couldn’t meet the high demand and eventually ran out. To say fans weren’t happy is an understatement. Seriously, the police had to be called at a few locations because fans were so angry that there was no sauce.
Angry crowd chants "We want sauce" as police force them back. 1000+ people camped out to get #szechuansauce but McDonalds had 70 sauces… pic.twitter.com/wEaqC64Hln

It looked like a literal riot inside multiple McDonald’s for Szechuan Sauce.

Eventually people started dragging Rick and Morty fans for being so rude to service workers who had no say over how many packets of sauce they received.
Wow: VP Pence & the Second Lady just walked out of an Indianapolis McDonald's after they failed to produce Szechuan Sauce

I am a shift manager at a McDonald's and we've been throwing out the Szechuan sauce because we're bigger fans of Bojack Horseman.

Eventually, McDonald’s released a statement saying they will make more sauce and distribute it to more locations. They called the crazed fans who disrupted many locations this weekend passionate.
You spoke. We’ve listened. Lots more #SzechuanSauce and locations. Details soon. And that’s the wayyy the news goes! pic.twitter.com/ooIrbZBsOw

It doesn’t matter what TV show you stan, no service worker should be treated like this. Some fans drove hours for the sauce and were disappointed when it was sold out, but that’s life. No need to be rude to workers who can’t change the situation.
Because of the high demand people who did get their hands on the sauce are selling extra’s on eBay for obscene amounts. Rick and Morty fans are wild.
