The media is a major reflection of current times. Whether we like it or not, they influence us while we influence them, too. In recent years, there’s been an increase in LGBTQ exposure in the media, from the fashion industry to entertainment. Transgender celebs like Laverne Cox and Janet Mock are major LGBTQ advocates and are defying stigmas. Though we have a long way to go, every milestone is progress.
Disney Channel is contributing to the conversation with the announcement that its show, Andi Mack, is set to debut the channel’s first openly homosexual character. Underrepresented minorities need figures and characters to look up to in the media, and shows and films that have the influence must do so. FX is set to debut its new show, Pose, with the largest cast of transgender actors to appear on a TV show.
Five transgender actors will be series regulars, and they’ll all be portraying transgender roles. The show’s writer Steven Canals said, “We are thrilled that Pose pushes the narrative forward by centering on the unique and under-told experiences of trans women and gay people of color.” It’s also equally important that the off-screen team is just as diverse in order to create accurate portrayal. Steven continued, “Ryan has assembled a strong team of storytellers and innovators to collaborate on telling this important narrative. As a Bronx-bred queer writer of color, I’m honored to aid in ushering this groundbreaking show into homes.”
As for the plot? The show is set in NYC in 1986 and will follow the characters in various social scenes, including the world of ball culture. Production began this month in NYC and the entire team is working to ensure the authenticity of the stories and scenes.
