Women have come a long way in terms of getting the equal rights we deserve, but still have a long way to go. Achieving these equal rights will take a ton of effort legally along with tackling the deeply-rooted attitudes and social norms of the treatment of women. Gender inequality is still so prevalent across the globe and violence against women is unfortunately the norm in a lot of places.
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to a study based on data between the years 2005 and 2016, 19 percent of women claimed to have experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner within the year prior to the survey.
Genital mutilation is also a prominent aspect of many societies. Although this practice is basically unheard of in the United States, genital mutilation is normal in many cultures and women have been ingrained with the belief that they will not be wanted by a man without having their genitals cut. The number of women undergoing this procedure have decreased since 2000, but still, one in three girls between the ages of 15 and 19 have undergone female circumcision in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Only approximately 50 percent of women claim to make their own decisions about consensual sex and contraceptives. That’s only HALF. That number should be 100 percent.
Jessica Valenti wrote, “Yes, we love the good men in our lives and sometimes, oftentimes, the bad ones too- but that we’re in full revolution against the lot of them is pretty amazing when you consider the truth: men get to rape and kill women and still come home to a dinner cooked by one.”
It’s time to make some serious changes and spread awareness about these issues.
If you’re experiencing domestic violence, you can call the hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
If you have experienced sexual assault you can call the hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
You can also call the dating abuse hotline at 866-331-9474.
There are so many resources out there to help you if you are a victim to these horrible forms of discrimination.
You can also do your part as well in helping the movement. You can donate to Equality Now or the many other organizations setting out to help women get the equality they deserve. And if you don’t have the means to donate, that’s okay too! It’s all about spreading the awareness that women are worth celebrating, not discriminating.
