Maine has broken a huge barrier this week. Miss Maine had their first hijab-wearing contestant compete this year, Hamdia Ahmed. The 19-year-old wore a hijab during the pageant and a burkini during the swimsuit portion of the competition.
She shared the news on her Twitter.

Hamdia’s Twitter says that she was born in Somalia and raised in a refugee camp in Kenya. The Miss Maine contestant has aspirations to become a model.

Her dream isn’t far off. Halima Aden became the first contestant in the Miss Minnesota contestant to wear a hijab. Now Halima is a high fashion model and is signed to IMG. She’s walked in Yeezy Season 5 show and was in a Vogue spread this summer.
Hamdia definitely has what it takes to be a model. According to one of the Instagram posts, she entered the pageant because she “wanted to try something new, and gain more confidence,” while also inspiring girls who look like her.
