Early Life 1983-1990
Ricky Martin was born Enrique Martin Morales on Christmas Eve in 1971. Determined to get his career started in the music industry, Martin auditioned three times to be in the uber-popular boy band Menudo. After he was considered to be too short, the talented Puerto Rican singer struck out after the third time and was finally chosen as a member at just 12-years-old. Despite Menudo’s incredible success, Martin recorded 11 albums with the group and eventually left the group at the age of 17 to focus on his solo career.
For a majority of the 90s, Martin completely put his entire focus on his solo career. Between the next eight years, Martin would put out four albums and tour the world and would bring home earnings of more than $5 million.
In 1999 Martin made his crossover into English and released his most successful and breakthrough smash hit “Livin La Vida Loca.” The song officially put Martin on the map and he quickly became a huge pop icon across the states. Martin returned to recording more Spanish albums in 2002 and would continue to perform and record Spanish albums for the next three years.
To kick off 2006, Martin’s MTV Unplugged concert in Miami was a huge commercial success. To keep the momentum of his career going, Martin went on a worldwide tour in 2007. After the tour, Martin took a three-year break from the industry to focus on his private life. This was the first break Martin got since he first started out with Menudo in 1983.
In 2010 Martin returned to the industry in a big way. He released his autobiography, Me, and after years of speculation and suspicion, came out to the public. The news, was a huge relief for Martin who had expressed just how hard it was to remain in the closet. Martin also expanded his portfolio as a singing coach when he made his debut on The Voice Australia.
Martin has continued to remain very busy the past four years. Since his public coming out, Martin has become a father to two boys, released more music and toured the world. As of 2016, he announced his residency in Las Vegas, “All In”, and has even found love in partner Jwan Yosef.
In the beginning of 2018 while doing press for a movie role. Martin shocked the world when he revealed that he and his partner had recently tied the knot.
