Films based on true stories are either the best or the worst. You could applaud the producers and director for portraying a historic event so vividly, or you could end up horrified that a movie’s events and characters actually exist or existed in real life. Spoiler ahead, you won’t always get the ending you’re hoping for. True stories that become movies make us that much more invested in the storyline and curious to see how events will translate onto the big screen. If shows have become a little tedious for you to keep up with, check out these upcoming movies based on true stories.
1. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Not going to lie, Zac Efron always seems to portray the same cocky character who gets by based on his looks in most of his films. But for this upcoming movie, he’ll be portraying the serial killer Ted Bundy, and it’s clear that his High School Musical days are over. Bundy had murdered about 30 women during the 70s and escaped prison twice, just to name a few of his heinous acts. While there’s no release date yet as shooting just began, it’ll be interesting to see Efron in this new light. Based on the title, we’re expecting to see just that.

Helen Mirren stars as Sarah Winchester, an heiress of the 19th century who believed she was cursed. Upon the advice of a medium, she moved West and used the fortune left by her late husband to construct the Winchester Mystery House. Winchester was adamant about continuous building and construction as a ceaseless rotation of carpenters worked on the house each day for 36 years until Winchester’s death. The construction decisions didn’t always make sense as some of the staircases often led to nowhere. Today, the mansion stands as a tourist attraction.
3. The 15:17 to Paris: February 9, 2018

Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film is based on the autobiography of three Americans who subdued a gunman during a 2015 terrorist attack in Europe. What makes the movie even more personal is that the three survivors will be starring as themselves in the movie, making their performances all the more significant.
4. 7 Days in Entebbe: March 9th, 2018

7 Days in Entebbe is based on Operation Entebbe of 1976 and acknowledges the tension between Palestinians and Israeli, and the involvement of the Ugandan government. Two members of a Palestinian Liberation group hijacked an Air France plane with the motive of freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israel. Though there were several casualties, the rescue mission was successful and to date, there have been three other films based on the events.

Sgt. Stubby might be the most lighthearted war film you’ll see. Based on the contributions of Sergeant Stubby, a Boston Terrier, the movie shows how a stray dog became the most decorated canine of WWI. Sergeant Stubby fought by the side of Corporal Robert Conroy in the French trenches and learned how to detect incoming poison gas attacks and locate wounded soldiers in contested territories.
