London-based visual artist Dom Sebastian has accused Katy Perry of using his artwork without his permission. He claims that the background artwork for Katy’s single “Chained to the Rhythm” is a copy of one of his previous pieces.

The piece is from his 2012 collection called the “Holographic Melt Series.” In an interview with Paper, he explained that the series was quite popular online, causing the holographic melt/holographic glitch artwork to gain popularity on the internet in the years after. Sebastian told the magazine that he stumbled across the artwork for Katy’s single during a recent Spotify session and noticed the similarities between one of his pieces. After seeing this, he posted a photo on Instagram alleging that Katy and her team “Has stolen my artwork.”

Within the Instagram post, he wrote, “”I’m shocked that Katy Perry and Capitol Records think it is acceptable to lift my work directly from my website and use it as they please without paying me or even contacting me.” Dom has tried to reach out to Capitol Record through social media and hasn’t gotten a response since. He also went on to explain that artists receive Copyright protection when creating artwork, but he says that unfortunately “there is no respect on the internet for artists work.”

Dom Sebastian has recently accused another singer of stealing the same artwork, posting on Instagram “another one – Kpop band @SF9official have also stolen and used as their album artwork. This album has over 4 million streams on @spotify alone. Again, no contact with them or their record label.”

Hopefully, this artist will see justice for his artwork.
