National Margarita Day is celebrated every February 22nd and all you need to observe the day is grab a margarita. If you’re fairly new to the drinking world (or you’ve been living under a rock) and don’t know what a margarita is, it’s a cocktail that contains tequila, triple sec, a splash of lime or lemon juice and usually salt on the outer rim. You can be wild and ask for a sugar rim, but salt is our personal preference.
The origins of the margarita are unclear. No one knows for sure who invented the tasty drink. The margarita, which means daisy in Spanish, was most likely an American invention since most claims are U.S. based.
Many people take credit for inventing this famous cocktail. One of the most famous claims is from Carlos “Danny” Herrera. He concocted this drink in 1938 for an aspiring actress who was allergic to all liquor except tequila. Texas socialite, Margarita Sames, said she whipped up the cocktail for her house party guests in 1948. The list of claims go and on.
One thing is for sure, the cocktail was made popular in 1953 when Esquire published an article about the now classic drink.
It’s safe to say that Margarita was created between the 30s and 40s. That’s isn’t the only thing that is unknown, no one knows when or why National Margarita Day started. Then again, who cares! It’s another a perfectly good excuse to drink up!
