As women, getting to hit the snooze button every morning and catch some extra zzz’s is virtually impossible. Unlike men who have the luxury to just roll outta bed, shower, brush their teeth and throw on a t-shirt and jeans before heading out the door, women have the time consuming and sometimes pain-in-the-neck task of having to tame our mane and put our makeup on before heading out into the world to face the day.

Sure pampering ourselves with the latest Kylie Cosmetics lip kit or eyeshadow palette is our fun little way of spoiling ourselves. And yea, sometimes it really is fun binge-watching the latest smokey eye tutorials, and Sephora hauls from our favorite Youtube Beauty Gurus but when you are forced to pretty much put makeup on every single day out of the year, aside from it being time-consuming, it becomes less fun and more like an annoying everyday chore. Spending an extra 30 to 40 minutes blow drying our hair and putting our face on to then face the world can become a total buzzkill doing it every day.
Like so many of us who are forced to put on makeup and do our hair for work every morning(which is damn near all women), Grand Rapids, Michigan newscaster Kamady Rudd was fed up with having to go through the daily routine and decided to do something about it. Rudd, who said she woke up every morning at 2:30 a.m. just to get to work in time to do her hair and makeup, came across a study on how women’s appearances affect their perceived competence. The 31-year-old decided to do a little experiment. For one week, she would go without doing her hair and makeup for television and see how the chips fall. Rudd told Glamour that she was ready for the barrage of negative comments from her followers but to her surprise, she received an outpouring amount of support and some major kudos.

“The first day I was a little nervous,” she told Glamour. “I even mentioned it to the comedians I was interviewing. They acted like they didn’t notice and it wasn’t brought up again.” Her viewers also didn’t care; in fact, many of them loved it. “I expected to get some nice insults if that makes sense,” she said. “The ones like, ‘We love your energy, but you look like you’ve been really tired.’ I couldn’t have been more wrong. A woman messaged me on Facebook—she noticed I’d been wearing no makeup for a few days and complimented it.”

Rudd says that due to the experiment, she feels more confident of society’s views on women. “Either people say they didn’t notice, or say they noticed but were able to acknowledge ‘huh, she isn’t wearing makeup’ and move on. I think that says something really good about people.”
With the cosmetics industry being a multi-billion dollar industry, women have been trained to need makeup for YEARS. With an expanding amount of beauty and bloggers worldwide the beauty industry at times has faced some backlash for the encouragement of wearing makeup.

For a small time, many viewers saw social media posts of young girls donning a full face of makeup. And many viewers felt like it was promoting the wrong message.10-year-old UK makeup guru & self-proclaimed “face doodler” Jack had tons of women talking about the young makeup vlogger representing and promoting wearing such heavy makeup at a young age.

In spite of the controversy over the encouragement of women to wear makeup all the time Rudd says she remains hopeful that the expectations surrounding women to always be “on” will change.
“I hope women, and especially young girls, can look at this and know that they don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time,” she says. “I really wanted to prove to myself that I could cover a story with as much focus on the actual story as normal, without worrying about my appearance. That is what local news is about. I want to make sure I’m giving people my best effort in the morning, no matter what. It’s all about proving the work we do, and the actions we take, are more important than what we look like. I’m all for makeup, or no makeup. Whatever you want to wear is, and should always be, totally up to you.”
