Wednesday, March 14th was meant to be a day of peaceful protesting for teens, and high schoolers around America as students from all across the country staged a walkout in response to the excessive shootings taking place on school grounds. The movement was met with praise and showed strength and solidarity amongst teens and college students worldwide who are looking to fight the battle for stricter gun laws and gun control regulations.
On a day met to represent peace and progress, Dylann Roof‘s younger sister, highschooler Morgan Roof, was arrested and charged with bringing weapons to her South Carolina high school.
Here is everything you need to know about the arrest as well as five things to know about Morgan Roof.
1. She allegedly posted some very insensitive and disturbing remarks about black people and the walkout on her Snapchat.
Morgan’s snap where she expresses her feelings toward the walkout quickly made its rounds on social media, including Twitter. When authorities came to arrest Morgan, they allegedly took her inappropriate and distasteful remarks on her Snapchat into account but could not charge her legally speaking with posing any type of threat. The principal of A.C. Flora High School, where Morgan attends told reporters,”The posting was not a threat, but was extremely inappropriate,” principal Susan Childs said. “That student was dealt with in a swift and severe manner as the posting caused quite a disruption.”
2. She’s accused of being in possession of marijuana as a well bringing a knife and pepper spray onto to school grounds.
According to Fox Carolina, the alarming Snapchat message led to Morgan’s arrest after she was caught on school grounds with marijuana, pepper spray and a knife-which are all clear school violations.
“A.C. Flora High School was contacted by the school administrator about Roof having marijuana, pepper spray, and a knife on school grounds,” the station reported. Since her arrest, she was charged with possession of marijuana and two counts of carrying weapons on school grounds. She was released on a $5,000 bond with the condition that she not return to school.
3. She along with her brother allegedly grew up in a troubled home.
There have been some conflicting reports that both Dylann and his sister Morgan grew up at a time where the family was going through some troubles. According to the New York Daily News, it was alleged that the family dynamic included abuse. The paper claimed that Dylann “was raised by a loving stepmom, but in a house destroyed by domestic violence.”
4. She’s written about her brother Dylann on her Tumblr before.
Morgan who continued to be active on her Tumblr and other forms of social media despite her brother’s horrific slayings told followers in a 2017 post that in spite of what her brother did, she will continue to live her life and be happy.
“Of course I care… but I’m not gonna let what he did affect what I do and how I live my life. I’m happy (because) I deserve to be. I have an amazing life and friends and support system. I went through and still have to deal with something unbelievably terrible that nobody understands. I choose not to let what he did ruin my happiness.”
5. She loves her brother regardless of how he feels about her.
Last year, The Post and Courier reported that in spite of her brother’s disassociation and lack of compassion toward her and the rest of her family, that she still loves him regardless.
According to the newspaper, Morgan told her brother that she wanted to attend the execution if it occurs. She also told him, “I love you, Dylann, even if you don’t love me back.” To which he responded, “OK.”
