Most everyone has beauty regrets they’d rather weren’t documented, from the ubiquitous ’90s chunky highlights to the trend of over-plucking eyebrows to near obscurity — but the world can take comfort in knowing that even Angelina Jolie has made a faux pas or two in her youth.
In a candid new interview with InStyle, the actress and filmmaker revealed that when she was young, she used a Sharpie marker to apply color to her hair.
“I’m sure I had my moments when I was little where I would put makeup all over my face, but I was a bit of a tomboy,” she remembered. “And then I was a bit of a punk. Nowadays it’s very popular to dye your hair blue, for example. In my day you bleached it and used a Sharpie.”

“I suppose my early memories were more as a creative person—and then early on as an actor,” she continued. “It’s a mask; it’s a part of creating a character.”
If anyone could pull of a Sharpie hair-dye, it’s Angelina — though fortunately, recent pictures of the actress make it safe to say she hasn’t touched a Sharpie to her brunette locks in a long, long time.
