Those with an irrational fear of chairlifts may want to skip reading this one.

Ten people were injured this week in the country of Georgia when a ski lift abruptly stopped and began hurtling its passengers backwards at high speeds. Some skiers flung themselves off the chairs, hoping the snow would cushion their landing, while others held on until their chair reached the bottom of the lift, only to be peeled off when the they rounded the corner.

Mountain Resorts Development Company told CNN that ambulance crew members were deployed to the scene, and those with injuries were hospitalized.

“According to initial information, Sadzele ski lift in Gudauri stopped working, chairs crashed into each other with riders suspended in the air, causing health injury of medium gravity,” the company said in a statement. “As a result, according to preliminary data, 10 people were injured.”

Several videos have surfaced on social media of the incident, and passerbys can be heard shouting as they watch the ski lift launch backwards in horror.

“We had to jump from it, because at the bottom it was total trash and no chance to stay safe.” Yuri Leontyey, who was on the lift, told CNN.
