Now, keep in mind that it’s only April 17 and there have been albums that have been kicking the charts. Yet, some records will be dropping shortly, including Janelle Monae’s most anticipated album, Dirty Computer which will be dropping on the 27th of this month. (If you are a fan of her music, I will make sure to pre-order her album on iTunes, go and do it now!) Anyway, let’s break down the records and artists that are up for this year’s nominations.
First and foremost. Let’s talk about Kendrick Lamar.
He has had a big year so far, and it’s only going to get bigger. His album, DAMN is up for three awards including the Top Billboard 200, Top Selling and Top Rap album. Kendrick himself is up for nine nominations including Top Artist, Top Male, Top Billboard 200, Top Hot 100, Top Streaming, Top Song Sales, Top Rap, Top Male Rap, Top Rap Tour. His song, “Humble,” has three nominations including Top 100 song, Top Streaming Song (Audio) and Top Rap Song. Also, do you remember a movie called, Black Panther? Yeah, that one that has been breaking records even before the film came out in theaters with its pre-ticket sales. Lamar produced the album for the billion-dollar movie, that featured and that has a nomination for the Best Soundtrack. You see, you might think its just another record when it’s not. The album celebrated and welcomes South African rappers and singers, along with the rhythms of South Africa. It’s up against The Fate of the Furious: The Album, The Greatest Showman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2, and Moana.
Let’s talk about Drake.
Drake has dropped two amazing videos, God’s Plan two months ago and Nice For What, which celebrated powerful, phenomenal, women with all-star starred remarkable women. Drake’s album, More Life is up for two nominations including Top Rap Album and Top Billboard 200 album. Drake himself is up for six nominations including Top Artist, Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Male Artist, Top Billard 200 Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Rap Male Artist. Let’s see if he will be walking away with awards this year.
Next, is Mr. Bruno Mars.
Mr. Mars had an excellent year, between filming a special at the Apollo, on tour and on tour with Cardi B as a special guest and making a remix of Finesse with Cardi B, along with making a video tributing to In Living Color. His album 24k Magic is nominated for the Top R&B Album. Bruno is nominated for Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top 100 Hot Artist, Top Radio Songs, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Touring Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Male Artist, Top R&B Tour.
Next is Ed Sheeran.
Sheeran has had an eventful year as well. From getting engaged to dropping a new album after a long hiatus and a tour for said album. Sheeran also appeared in his best friend, Taylor’s video for Endgame. Sheeran is nominated for Top Artist, Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Touring Artist. As you can see, Sheeran and Lamar led the Billboard Music Awards nominations since both artists have nine nominations just by themselves.
However, according to Billboard’s website, Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars leads the nominations with 15 BBMA nominations apiece. All three are up for Top Artist, competing against Drake (9 noms total), and Taylor Swift (5 noms overall) in that field.
Last but not least, Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift has had an exciting comeback with her album, Reputation that dropped back in November and she’s currently getting ready for her Reputation tour. Swift is nominated for Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and, Top Billboard 200 Artist. Her album, Reputation is nominated for Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Selling Album.
It looks like things will be interesting on May 20, 2018.
