April isn’t just the month of April Fool’s Day and Easter. An unofficial holiday falls on April 20th, known as 4/20 or “Weed Day.” According to TIME, the significance of the date has a diverse amount of theories, from it either being a code among cops to the specific time that a group of high schoolers in the 70s would meet to light up. Whichever origin story you want to believe, April 20th is globally recognized as the day of marijuana. Some see the day as a protest for national legalization while others just want to partake in the culture.
Hip-hop artists, as well as movies like Pineapple Express, Friday, Ted, and Neighbors, have somewhat desensitized us to the practice, no matter your views. The west coast is famed for its legalization of weed for recreational use while a handful of other states have it legalized solely for medical purposes and others have it completely banned. Over time, it seems likely that all 50 states will have cannabis legalized but until that day comes, celebrate 4/20 with these memes and tweets.
